You Can Teach Yourself Lever Harp by B. Kolle, L. Riley
Created: 01/02/08
I like the fact that most of the melodies in this book contain 3 versions of the song - simple, intermediate and advanced. This way as I get better I can continue to play familiar melodies but add more enhancement. It gives basic information on harps in general, discusses how to tune a harp (which seems to take me forever, but that's another story), how to use your hands and plucking techniques. I love the cd that came with the book,it's a great inspiration to continue to do better. What I dislike about the book? The information on the use of levers could be illustrated, not much space is devoted to the topic. When the need to sharp a string in a melody occurs, it simply says "don't forget to flip the (note) strings", for the most part. There are only 6 of the 33 songs in the book that require you to sharpen strings. So, yes, you can teach yourself lever harp ... but it's limited. But at this point in time, I'm very much a beginner, so I can't complain too much. It'll be a while before I'm ready to tackle even those 6 songs. Why did I decide to buy this book? Couple of reasons -- my Christmas gift was a 29 string harp (duh!); I am very familiar with the Mel Bay "family", if you will, of musical instruction texts and know them to have a good "track record". Hope this helps! Happy plucking!
