Album Notes
Audio Mixer: Rich Costey.Often referred to as Scotland's Interpol, Franz Ferdinand made the scene with a sound that, like its NYC contemporary, owed a huge debt to 1980s post-punk and new wave. That fact, along with the members' snappy outfits and art-school sensibilities, allowed the group to easily slide into a fan-space somewhere between The Strokes and The Rapture. While the Wire influence is still in full effect on the Glasgow quartet's second full-length album, YOU COULD HAVE IT SO MUCH BETTER, there are also big dollops of Beatles, from the throbbing McCartney-esque bass on "The Fallen" to the "Julia"-style vocals on the acoustic ballad "Fade Together." With its clever lyrics and jaunty feel, "Eleanor Put Your Boots On" mines mid-period Kinks territory, while "Walk Away" recalls the clever wordplay and loopy melodies of XTC. Elsewhere, the group refines its melding of frenetic Duran Duran-approved dance rhythms and Duane Eddy-by-way-of-Adam Ant twang guitar, delivering a bracing and high-energy platter of stylish and danceable rock.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars out of 5 - Musically, the palette has grown without getting out of hand. Lead guitarist Nick McCarthy appears to have an inexhaustible well of singable guitar riffs: pungent, perfunctory, and hardly ever pretty...
Mojo

Ranked #11 in Mojo's The 50 Best Albums Of 2005 - An imperious state-of-the-nation address delivered with ease.
Mojo

[It] overflows with danceable beats and catchy hooks.
Vibe

...[S]hows Franz Ferdinand working harder and sounding bigger, befitting their stature as rock's saviors of the moment.... - Grade B+
Entertainment Weekly

Kapronos' voice is a marvelous wide-eyed sneer....[The album] sounds exactly like what you'd expect, with pumping disco beats and lookin'-sharp guitars on track after propulsive track. - Grade: B+
Spin

Ranked #3 in Spin's 40 Best Albums Of 2005 - Their second disc builds on the kraut-disco of their debut, but frontman Alex Kapranos' dubious sensitivity makes YOU COULD HAVE IT so much better than its predecessor.
Spin

3.5 out of 5 stars - ...YOU COULD HAVE IT SO MUCH BETTER shows deeper roots in the first wave of white electric dance music: specifically the crunchy-guitar R&B and arch-garage songwriting of 1965-67 Kinks....

You could have it so much better the second time around

Created: 21/08/06
Franz Ferdinand definitely makes it better the second time around. I wasn't much of a fan of their first album - but their second offering "You Could Have It So Much Better" proved to me that they have the staying power to be top of their game. Coming from the fame of their mega-hit 'Take Me Out', the album brings us the same retro-rock beats that they're famous for. The Franz sound, have more of the 50's and 60's feel in this album. Definitely still bringing out the same dancey upbeat tunes , you’ll find yourself trapped in a delightful time warp in Franz’s 13 song line-up. With 60s go-go inspired beats in ‘What You Meant’ to songs worthy of being in a Sean Connery James bond flick like ‘Walk Away’- Franz pumps out guitar riffs reminiscent of 60’s instrumental acts like the Shadows and the Ventures.

My favorite is ‘Do You Want To’ which is the first single to come out of their album. A fun song with quirky lyrics - “I woke up tonight and I said I’m gonna make somebody love me. I gonna make somebody love me. And now I know, I know that it’s you! You’re lucky, lucky. You’re so lucky!”. It kind of reminds me of Cake’s ‘Short Skirt and Long Jacket’ – because it’s one of those unique love songs that you’ll want to dedicate to someone you love that’ll make them laugh.

Retro, with a modern twist to it. Franz Ferdinand packs a punch with a solid second album that can’t miss.

This second offering from Franz Ferdinand is as good as or in some ways better than the debut. I myself am a great fan of these young men from Glasgow and their style of catchy, danceable rock tunes. A breath of fresh air on today's music scene. Highly recommended!

Eleanor Put Your Boots On

Created: 17/05/07
You Could Have It So Much Better is more songs in the same vein as their debut. The only two that break the mold are the Beatlesque sounds of Eleanor Put Your Boots On and Fade Together. This is a good solid album but not as refreshing as their first. 4 Stars.
