Zathura (DVD, 2006, Special Edition, Widescreen)

Jon Favreau, Josh Hutcherson, Jonah Bobo|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Actor-turned-director Jon Favreau (SWINGERS, ELF) delivers another work of intelligent, charming family fare with this space adventure, based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg (JUMANJI). Older brother Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and the younger Danny (Jonah Bobo) are constantly at war with one another, bickering over the mediating voice of their long-suffering father (Tim Robbins). When he has to go to the office to replace some papers the boys destroyed in their crossfire, he leaves them in the dubious care of older sister Lisa (Kristen Stewart), who is sleeping upstairs. When Danny discovers an old board game called Zathura stored in the basement, his excitement is lost on Walter, who has no time for such old, boring toys. Soon, however, the game becomes impossible to ignore, as the boys are transported into space, and one of them must win in order to make it home again. Each turn brings a new, often dangerous, surprise, and the boys are faced with a murderous robot, an explosive meteor shower, and lizard-like aliens, while poor Lisa is cryogenically frozen early in the game. The adventure yields some heartwarming, family-friendly life lessons, and Dax Shepard (IDIOCRACY) is unusually subdued in his role as a stranded astronaut.

"Favreau and his effects team have fun with the retro-futurist stylings of the game....The relatively restrained use of computer imagery is refreshing..."

LOVED IT!!!

Created: 10/08/06
I have read som many reviews from people who absolutely hated this movie, complaining about the "cheesy special effects" and the actors themselves. My 4 year old son and I love this movie. It's actually one of the few that I can stand watching (sometimes over and over). I think the young actors did a great job of portraying the average sibling rivalry situations in alot of families. The special effects were great, and just another reason why I really liked this movie. The director himself says that he was shying away from all CGI effects that are used in ALL movies now in days, so he could avoid the "video game" effect they leave. The robot costumes and huge Zorgon lizard costumes were actually there on set. My son LOVED the Zorgons and robot!! We even rushed out and bought him the Zathura board game. As far as the language that other people have complained about, I think there are like 3 instances (that I can remember) where some questionable words and phrases are used. My son's reaction? Nothing at all. We don't speak like that in my home therefor he never even noticed the swear words. He didn't bring it up and neither did I. Bottom line: this a great, fun movie that parents and children can watch together and actually enjoy.

This is a very good movie adaptation from a good book. Minus the two minor curse words, this is a nice family, fun movie. If you like sci-fi, you'll get a luke-warm feeling from this movie but a very heart warming ending. The two young leads are great as the two brothers finally coming together to work out a difficult situation. Mix in the clever Dax Shepard and the beautiful Kristen Stewart, and you have a family favorite. I highly recommend Zathura and give it a "take-it-all-now" rating of 4 out of 5! Thank you and keep on ebaying!

This move was purchesed for my five-year-old son for Christmas. This is definately one of his favorite movies. I think we've watched it almost everyday since he got it. It reminded me of Jumanji almost too much. The whole playing a game, living out the courses of the game until it ends then all the sudden everything is back to normal and no-ones the wiser to what happened except the people who played the game. Great concept and very imaginative but like I said, too much like Jumanji. My son on the other hand prefers Zathura over Jumanji, may-be it just depends on which you've seen first and your individual interests of outer-space vs. earth-bound. All in all, good movie and the guy who plays the astronaut-- very cute.

Best so far of Dax Shepard movies. A great intro to Dax Shepard let alone a great movie for the family. High adventure, excitement, mystery, suspense, humor, great plot, and Dax the astronaut. Anyone who doesn't like this movie is set on being miserable! It's just plain fun and one you want to watch over and over and over again. The moral to the story is unexpected and kicks butt... After watching this movie I need to ask Dax Shepard to marry me!

It is funny and exciting to watch as the boys play the game to get back home. All the encounters they face!Like the Zorgons and a crazy robot that turns out to be a good guy. Then having a card turn out to be a good one to make the journey home easier!I would recommend this product to anyone with a great imagination and loves to laugh!
