Miriam or, The Power of Truth: A Jewish Tale by the Author of "Influence" (Charlotte Anley)
Third edition. London:J.Hatchard and son, 187 Piccadilly, 1832.
Bound by Goteler Bookseller & Printer Hounslow. with 3/4 dark blue leather over marbled boards, gilt lettering on spine

Miriam, first published in 1826, was authored by Charlotte Anley who is referred on the title page simply as "The Author of Influence". Influence, published under the initials C.A.,was Anley's first and most successful novel. On sale here is the stated Third Edition of Miriam, published by J. Hatchard and Son, 1832 and it seems to be the earliest copy sold online. This rare book is beautifully bound and weighted, with 3/4 dark blue leather over marbled boards, gilt lettering on spine. The title page is either inscribed by a knowing 19th century reader or by the author herself.  In pencil underneath "by The Author of Influence" is written "Mifs Anley" (using the written long form 's', commonly used in handwriting well into the late 19th century).  No signatures of Charlotte Anley could be used to compare the inscription in this book. We can imagine that if not by the author, then certainly by a reader who both knew the identity of the author, and who would refer to Anley as Miss (Mifs).

About the book:
Though little known,  Miriam was influential in a number of ways.  The novel is well known in the genre of Conversion fiction, a genre popular in the early 18th century.  Conversion fiction was produced by protestant authors who derided the perceived ritualistic and traditionalist natures of both Judaism and Catholicism and who sought to glorify the Protestant character of England as a nation. In his doctoral thesis Howard (2007) indicates that Conversion fiction was at its height between 1823-1829, springing from Grace Kennedy's Father Clement, and that Miriam is its most interesting example.  The book's "creative adaptation of literary norms" includes its disruption of prevailing gender norms "where the daughter comes to take precedence over the father". Further,  Anley takes in focus both Judaism and Catholicism, rather than focusing solely on the  "Catholic Other," which was more customary in this genre.  The Preface of the book introduces both its inspiration and topic: The tale of "Miriam" now offered to the public is founded on an anecdote said to be a well attested fact, which the author met with some months ago in the 'Cottage Magazine,' where the narrative is briefly detailed with great simplicity and elegance; of an American Jew, converted to Christianity by the death of his only child, a beautiful girl whom he had reared with no common care and affection. She embraced the Christian faith unknown to her father until with her dying lips she confessed to him her apostacy from Judaism, giving him at the same time a Testament, with a solemn injunction to believe in "Jesus of Nazareth." This anecdote appeared to the author a good outline for a more elaborate work, as furnishing ample subject for imagination, and considerable ground for instructive information....

About the Author: Charlotte Anley (1796-1893)
Charlotte Anley was a 19th century English Quaker novelist, and social and religious writer, as well as a composer and lyricist. Miriam and Influence are her two most influential novels. Four years after Miriam was published, Anley was commissioned by the famous Quaker prison reformist Elizabeth Fry to research, investigate and report on women's prisons in Australia between 1836-38. Anley published her report in 1841.  Miriam Dixson writes of the report , "Charlotte Anley, an English Quaker disciple of Elizabeth Fry, behaved in a warm and accepting way towards the most violent convict women at the Paramatta Factory. Their response is a most moving affirmation of the power of love."

We can provide more pictures upon request, and are glad to answer any questions you may have.  This is a rare and beautifully bound book by an interesting 19th century Quaker writer.
