Very rare, original, 1860’s Civil War period Stereoview Photograph of the interior of Fort Lafayette in New York Harbor - a Prisoner of War Camp that housed both POW's and Northern Confederate Sympathizers / Political Prisoners confined under Abraham Lincoln's Presidential Order suspending the Constitutional right of habeas corpus. This wonderful, original flat mount stereo photo measures approx. 6 7/8" by 3 3/8" and is mounted on its original, yellow colored card mount. The View is identified with a manuscript notation on the reverse that reads simply "Fort Lafayette". It came to us with a small collection of Mathew Brady / E. & H. T. Anthony "War Views" and it certainly looks like a view by Brady /Anthony but we have been unable to identify the photographer definitively.

This fascinating, original Civil War Stereoview Image features a wonderful view of the interior of the Fort with large piles of cannonballs on the grounds and cannons atop the wall pointed toward New York Harbor. In the foreground there is a soldier wearing a Hardee hat and carrying a long rifle. There is a bugler playing his bugle with another soldier standing beside him. There is a third soldier seated atop a pile of cannonballs. Near the center of the Image there are two officers facing the camera and a little girl. It has been speculated that the bearded man standing next to the little girl is Lieutenant Charles O. Wood and the little girl his adopted daughter. Lieut. Wood was the officer in immediate command over the Fort Lafayette prisoners. He was described as "brutal" by many of the prisoners. He had been a baggage handler on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad before the war and had received his commission, it was said, from President Lincoln as a reward for successfully smuggling Lincoln's baggage through Baltimore prior to his inauguration.

Fort Lafayette was an island coastal fortification in New York Harbor. It was built next to Fort Hamilton at the southern tip of what is now Bay Ridge in the New York City borough of Brooklyn . Constructed on Hendrick's Reef during the War of 1812 and finally completed in 1818, Fort Diamond was renamed Fort Lafayette in 1825 to celebrate the visit of the Marquis de La Fayette, hero of the American Revolution, to the United States. In the years before the 1861, the fort's 72 heavy cannon commanded the primary approaches to the harbor, but during the Civil War, the casemates were used to house Confederate prisoners of war and political prisoners opposed to Abraham Lincoln's administration policies. Rebuilt after a catastrophic fire in 1868, the fort was later used for ammunition storage and transfer until World War II .

When originally converted to a prison, the fort was believed capable of holding up to fifty POWs. From the very beginning, however, twenty were held in each battery while nine to ten were held in each casemate. Before long there were often thirty-five to a battery and up to thirty in a casemate. When the prisoners arrived at Fort Lafayette, they were escorted to the office of Lieutenant Wood where, again, they were searched and had their names recorded. All their money was confiscated; they were given a receipt and then shown to their quarters. Some of the first inmates included those who had done nothing more than express sympathy for the South: members of the Maryland legislature; Baltimore's police commissioners; James W Ball, a New Jersey Democrat who was later elected to the U.S. Senate; and Francis K. Howard, editor of a Baltimore newspaper and grandson of Francis Scott Key. In addition, all officers who had resigned commissions in the U.S. Army to accept Confederate commands were, if captured, automatically sent there.

This fantastic and very rare, Civil War Stereoview Photo is in excellent condition. The Photographic Images are generally clean and crisp and exhibit sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. The card mount has some light edge wear and light soiling.

A very rare and wonderful, 1860’s Stereoview Photo of Fort Lafayette - a Union POW Prison in New York Harbor and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
