UNIQUE - BEAUTIFUL

ORIGINAL 1898 FOLIO-SIZE SCRAPBOOK

containing quite an exhaustive

Chronology of the

SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR

> Period News & Human Interest Articles, Magazine Articles, and Political Cartoons <

Furthermore ...

There is the mystery of who assembled this singular scrapbook.  I have a keen suspicion that it was ...

SWEDISH ARTIST GEORG STOOPENDAL.

Here's why....

Though no name appears within the scrapbook, attached to the front cover is a beautiful (approx.) 8" x 9" picture -- apparently taken from a poster or magazine cover -- featuring American cavalry soldiers. At the bottom of this picture it says "Copyright 1898 by Truth Co.," which I believe clearly indicates that the picture was one of a series of Spanish-American War-related images put out in 1898 by "The Truth" Magazine.

Now, as far as I've been able to determine through research (though I'm not an expert in the field), the original picture was not painted by Stoopendaal. (He did, however, produce a beautiful painting that same year -- 1898 -- entitled The Charge of the 6th and 16th Regulars Up San Juan Hill, July 1. For, Stoopendaal was living in the U.S.A. during the war, and it clearly caught his attention.)  Then, why is Stoopendaal's name on the cover, unless it were to signify that this scrapbook was his?

It will be up to the buyer to further explore and solve this mystery.  One thing is clear -- Stoopendaal himself did not write the name on the cover picture.  It is actually written as "G. Stoopendall" (one "A", two L's), and it's unthinkable, of course, that anyone would misspell his own name.

My conjecture is that Georg Stoopendaal did, indeed, assemble this scrapbook, even adorning the cover with a work of art much akin to what he was soon to paint.  But he did not put his name on it anywhere.  So, some future owner of the book, who knew it had belonged to Stoopendaal, took it upon himself to add the name.  Again, this conclusion is all my own, and you (the buyer) are free to draw yours -- hopefully a more sound one -- through additional research.

What's in the Scrapbook

It contains 144 pages (i.e., sides of a sheet) of material. (There are also a few blank pages, mainly toward the back.)  I started to count the individual news items -- which I believe number roughly 250 -- but I quickly realized that the tally would have to be an arbitrary number.  There are numerous columns that contain news articles (each with its unique byline/dateline) literally strung together like sausages under a larger headline in telegraph style.  So, depending whether you counted these as a single item or multiple, the total tally could vary widely from about 200 to 300 or more items in this scrapbook.

THERE ARE ...

- Articles of war news (the bulk of the material) roughly arranged in chronological order

- Also, a couple of war-related human interest articles

- A few war-related articles from Scribner's Magazine

- Three political cartoons (ALL ORIGINAL CLIPS ... including the famous two-gun Teddy Roosevelt cartoon!) -- See photo.

- Three photographs (i.e., photos from a magazine or newspaper) of important political and military figures

- Toward the end ... final war statistics: casualties, dollar costs, etc. (See photo.)

- AND AT THE VERY END ... A fully detailed listing of American naval warships! (See final photo.)

Size (approximate):

  • The scrapbook is 15" tall x 10" wide x 2" thick at the spine

Condition Details:

The clips are a bit yellowed in keeping with their age.

The scrapbook has AWESOME antique character -- scuffed, flaked, faded, and yellowed, as you would expect from an original album of the late 19th century.  The binding itself is surprisingly not falling apart, nor are any of the pages falling out, coming loose, or even torn -- only flaked at the edges, as mentioned.

Spine is exposed but not coming apart. NO evidence of moisture or mildew. NO bad odors.

See photos for detail.
