Item specifics

Brand: Crosley
Make sure to check out all of my other auctions after you look at this one. I'm running more than a half dozen special five-day auctions this week, all of them ending on Sunday night.  You'll find an eclectic assortment of antiques and collectibles, and I suspect there will be something to interest just about everyone.

Here's a nice Crosley 51 two-tube regenerative receiver manufactured in 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Mr. Crosley made thousands of these little radios --  tens of thousands of them actually -- bragging at one point that he was selling more radios in a month than most of his competitors were selling in an entire year. The secret to Crosley's success, by his own admission, was simplicity, but reliability figured heavily into the equation as well.  His radios were not lavish, but they invariably worked, and worked well, which was more than could usually be said for the more hifalutin products being pitched by almost everyone else.

As you can see in the photographs, the radio is in very good condition throughout, with normal signs of age and use but no signs of neglect or abuse.  Panel is in excellent shape, with no chips, no cracks, no other damage.  Knobs and tuning dial are also in excellent condition, and the cam-driven tuning condenser is working properly.  All of the binding post nuts are original, and no nuts are missing. Chassis is in good condition, with minor electrical restoration evident and a clean spiderweb tuning assembly.  The original Crosley AF transformer is still good.

As noted above, this is a tested, working radio, still capable of tuning local and distant AM stations if you have the proper power supply and antenna.  Because the radio has a single stage of audio amplification, it can power a sensitive 1920's horn speaker as well as a pair of headphones, although the speaker should only be used with strong, nearby stations.

If you wish to use the radio for modern broadcast reception, you'll need a good regulated DC power supply (such as an ARBEIII), a good indoor ground connection, and a longwire outdoor antenna (at least 120 feet long, and 20 feet above the ground).  It will also help to have had some experience tuning/operating a similarly configured 1920's battery radio.  Patience doesn't hurt either.

That's about it.  I will pack it carefully and properly.  I've been shipping antique phonographs and wireless sets for years, and I know how to get fragile antiques to you safely. Auction participants with no prior feedback history should also contact me before placing a bid.  Buyer prepays and includes shipping.  Paypal okay.

Please note:  Ebay has recently required all members to change their passwords.  Therefore, if you're planning to bid with last-second automated bidding software (ie, Auctionsniper, Esnipe, etc) and you've recently changed your ebay password, you will need to change the password information stored in your bidding software as well.  Otherwise your bid will not be registered.
