Grading Details:

Abbreviations used above refer to the American Numismatic Association (ANA) Grading System as follows: (These descriptions are very brief; for detailed description, see the ANA Grading Book.)

BU = Brilliant Uncirculated – “New,” has never been in circulation but may have bag marks. The numbers from 60 to 70 refer to how nice the coin appears. The higher the number, the closer to “perfect” the coin is. AU = Almost Uncirculated – Small amount of wear on the highest points. (traces of wear on hair in front of and in back of ear on obverse, tops of legs and center of eagle’s breast on the reverse) Usually a highly lustrous coin. (AU+ = so close to “new” that you will need a high-powered magnifier to see any wear.) XF = Extremely Fine – Very light wear on the high points. (high points of hair around ear and at hair line up to crown on the obverse, high points of breast, legs and claws on the reverse) VF = Very Fine – More wear than XF. Three quarters of the lines still show in hair; cheek lightly worn on obverse. Wear shows on breast; legs are worn smooth; most details on wings are clear on reverse F = Fine – Details show only at back of hair; motto weak but visible on obverse. Feathers on breast and legs are worn smooth; parts of wings worn smooth on reverse.. VG = Very Good – Entire design is weak. Most details in hair are worn smooth. All letters in date are clear but tops of numerals may be flat. Rims are complete. G = Good – Well Worn with very little detail remaining. Half of motto readable. Rim merges with letters on obverse. On reverse, eagle worn nearly flat. Leaves breast & legs worn smooth. Legend visible but merges with rim. AG = About Good – Head outlined with nearly all details worn away. Legend on reverse merge with rim. Entire design and lettering partially worn away.

Split Grade:

I use “split” grades to describe an “in between” coin. For example “VF-XF” means that the coin is better than Very Fine and may have some of the characteristics of Extremely Fine, but it isn’t quite good enough to grade it XF.

Listing Errors:

Because I usually list several hundred coins per month, I occasionally make a mistake in the listing, usually by loading up the wrong photo for the listed coin. If you notice a photo that obviously doesn’t match the listing description, please bring this to my attention before bidding so I can correct the photo promptly. In the event a listing ends with a discrepancy between the photo and the listing description, the description will be what I’ll go by to make the delivery. Questions?
