As with all my listings, HUGE photos are below!

An original 1950 Linen-backed Rene Gruau Fashion illustration print for couturier Patulle-Jo Copeland, featuring one of Gruau's classic beauties sveltely attired in a full swing coat, with classic fifties exaggerated feminine curves. The piece is of silk barathea, and buttons twice at the full back-vent which swings open to show the creamy silk-surah lining! Accented by a cowl of white ermine. John Frederics hat.

Published by the short-lived and phenomenal 'Flair' magazine. One of Two, see my other listings!

Gorgeous original print by the master of Fashion Illustration, Ready to Frame!

Rene Gruau's unquestionable passion for fashion is defined in the distinctive and sure sophistication of his black lines. The glamorous and languid ladies (and gents) who inhabit his elegant drawings are instantly recognizable as belonging to the Master of Fashion Illustration.

Gruau's artistic talent in fashion illustration merited him publication in the Milanese fashion journal Lidel at the age of 14 (circa 1923)and by the time he reached 18, he was published internationally, in the US, Italy, and France. In his lifetime, Gruau worked for numerous magazines including Marie-Claire, Femina, Elle, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Flair, Figaro, and L'Officiel de la Couture. Gruau was hired by major designers like Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Rochas, Lanvin, Elizabeth Arden, and Hubert de Givenchy. Gruau gave life to their haute couture clothing and expanded their popularity with his captivating illustrations. Gruau, whose posters and advertisements often echoed both classical Japanese drawings and Toulouse-Lautrec's sketches of fin de siècle Paris night life, was perhaps best known for creating the marketing images for Miss Dior perfume and for Rouge Baiser lipstick. During his career Gruau collaborated with fashion houses such as Givenchy, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Schiaparelli and Dior in haute couture design. Gruau's personal friendship with Christian Dior facilitated their successful collaboration on Advertisements and Fashion design. Gruau moved to the United States in 1948 to work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He remained with the magazine for two years, and then went to work as sole illustrator for Flair (Fleur Cowles). There were exhibitions of Gruau's work at the Paris Musée du Costume in 1989 and Musée de la Publicité in 1999. According to Alan Riding of the New York times,"everything he did, he evoked the glamour and style of the world of high fashion".

Today Gruau’s works are collected and exhibited by the finest art institutions including the Louvre in Paris, the MOMA in New York and the Victoria and Albert in London.

This Original print has been Archivally Linen-backed!
Linen-backing gives Original ephemera, prints, posters etc new life! They are cleaned, stabilized and restored; making them much more handleable, frameable and a more valuable asset to your collection.
Linen-backing is the practice of choice of top collectors and museums for conserving and maintaining the wonderful vintage ephemera, posters, and prints that otherwise would be lost due to their natural deterioration. Just like magazines, advertising posters, and periodicals of today, these wonderful graphics and images were, for the most part, not designed to last forever. They were, as the name implies, ephemeral! Linen-backing is a process whereby the print is carefully cleaned, and then mounted on acid free paper over linen, this is a reversible conservation process that stabilizes, consolidates, and preserves these collectible investments for decades perhaps even centuries to come.

Please see the pictures for best condition and description details. More photo's/scans can be emailed upon request. The digital watermark on the photos does not appear on the print itself.
