1961 CESSNA 182, GREAT PROJECT, LITTLE DAMAGE, LOW PRICE !!
THIS 182 WAS NOT INVOLVED IN A TRADITIONAL ACCIDENT !!
WHILE TAKING OFF FROM A SMALL STRIP, A SUDDEN CROSSWIND GUST PUSHED THIS AIRCRAFT SIDEWAYS INTO THE WING OF AN ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT PARKED AT THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY.
THE NONE TRADITIONAL PART IS THAT THE PILOT, ALTHOUGH HE WAS OBVIOUSLY AWARE THAT HE HAD HIT SOMETHING, AND THAT HIS AIRCRAFT HAD OBVIOUS DAMAGE, ELECTED TO FLY THIS AIRPLANE OVER 1 HOUR AWAY, LANDING WITHOUT INCIDENT AT THE PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA AIRPORT !!
ALTHOUGH THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE PILOTS SIDE OF THE AIRPLANE, IT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT ENOUGH TO HAVE MADE THE AIRCRAFT UNFLYABLE !!
THE DAMAGE IS LOCALIZED TO AFT OF THE CABIN, AND DOES NOT INCLUDE THE FORWARD FUSELAGE AND FIREWALL THAT ALMOST ALWAYS GET DAMAGED WITH ANY OTHER TYPE OF ACCIDENT IN A 182 !!
DAMAGE IS TO THE TAILCONE STARTING ABOUT MIDWAY THROUGH THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT OPENING, AND PROCEEDS BACK TO ABOUT 2 FEET FORWARD OF THE HORIZONTAL STAB LEADING EDGE.
ALL OF THE DAMAGE IS TO THE PILOTS SIDE, AND IS ALL LOWER, NOT UPPER SKINS.
THE TOP OR "TURTLEDECK" SKIN APPEARS UNDAMAGED, AND THERE IS NO DAMAGE OR WRINKLING TO THE HORIZONTAL ATTACH BULKHEADS.
THERE IS A VERY SMALL DENT TO THE LEADING EDGE OF THE LEFT HORIZONTAL (WILL POUND OUT), A SMALL DENT IN THE LOWER COWL, AND BOTH OF THE PILOT SIDE WINDOWS ARE BROKEN !!
THAT IS THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE !!
THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE AIRPLANE !!
THE WINGS, WHICH HAVE BEEN CONVERTED WITH A HORTON STOL KIT FOR BETTER LOW SPEED CONTROL AND SHORTER TAKE-OFF, APPEAR UNDAMAGED !!
ALL CONTROL SURFACES, ON THE WINGS AND THE TAIL, WERE UNDAMAGED !!
BOTH DOORS ARE UNDAMAGED, CLOSE EASILY AND SEAL TIGHTLY, WITH NO DAMAGE TO THE FRAMES. MAIN GEAR AND GEARBOXES ARE NOT DEFORMED AS I SAID EARLIER, THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END !!!
FIREWALL IS NOT DEFORMED !!
NOSEBOWL, UPPER COWL AND COWL FLAPS ARE UNDAMAGED, AND THE DENT IN THE LOWER COWL IS SMALL AND REPAIRABLE NO NOSEGEAR DAMAGE.
THE CONTROL CABLES GOING TO THE TAIL SURFACES APPEAR TO HAVE ESCAPED DAMAGE, AND THEY ARE STILL TIGHT, WITH CONTINUITY TO THE CONTROLS.
THE 0-470 ENGINE HAS RECENTLY BEEN REMOVED, ALONG WITH ITS ACCESSORIES AND THE PROPELLER, BUT THE UNDAMAGED ENGINE MOUNT, PLUS ALL FIREWALL MOUNTED ITEMS REMAIN INTACT
THROTTLE, MIXTURE AND PROP CABLES WERE NOT DAMAGED IN THE REMOVAL
AIRFRAME TOTAL TIME IS 4026
PROP HAS ONLY 138 HOURS SINCE MAJOR, AND IS UNDAMAGED !!
LAST 5 ANNUALS PERFORMED BY A GOOD SHOP IN CALIFORNIA, WITH GOOD ENTRIES
THIS AIRPLANE IS SOLD WITH AIRFRAME LOGBOOKS SINCE NEW, AND FAA BILL OF SALE.
THIS AIRPLANE WILL MAKE A VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD REPAIR PROJECT, EITHER BY REPLACING THE DAMAGED RIBS AND SKINS, OR REPLACING THE ENTIRE TAILCONE FROM ONE OF THOSE AIRPLANES THAT HIT THE NOSE, LIKE NORMALLY HAPPENS.
TIED DOWN ON THE ATLANTIC AVIATION RAMP AT THE PALM SPRINGS AIRPORT, PALM SPINGS CALIFORNIA (KPSP) SO IT WOULD BE EASY TO FLY IN AND SEE IT IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA.
THE INTERIOR CONDITION AND EXTERIOR PAINT ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT ARE NOT MODERN.
