This is a rare older, fair quality hand printed original silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper and mounted on a single black 8x10 inch backing board **which is included as part of the print that you can see here (see photo) with more caption and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau in the front and fellow surfer Steve Gaines at Haleiwa (Alii Beach), North Oahu ©1968. The white sticker is on the shrink wrap. This was early winter when the first major surfing competitions were taking place and all the pros were all over the North Shore for the winter. *** Please note that the sky area has some imperfections that were on the negative that you can't easily see on the smaller photo here. Be aware that this photo is unlike newer computer digital prints because the original was shot on older grainy black and white film and printed from the original negative and when enlarged will look grainier. It has the unique look of a silver halide gelatin photo, and is still a very nice historic print. It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes this area or vintage surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.

It is initialed and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. It is from an older grainy negative so please be aware of that, and has some blemishes in the sky areas. This is right before short boards started showing up on the north shore. Aikau, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Sunset, Laniakea, Makaha, Waimea, and Chun's Reef. Edward Ryan Aikau, who was born on Maui in 1946 was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of the photographer. Ironically it was the late big wave surfer Mark Foo who came up the term "Eddie Would Go" which actually referred to the fact that Eddie would go for it on the biggest waves that other surfers refused, often taking off on the other side of the bowl at Waimea on giant days! Eddie was a friend of ours and we gave him copies and got permission to sell this photo.

Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii. We're proud to mention that many of our photos are being used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0". The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE:  e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look suggested. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from an original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin at the edges of the photo which you can see here. Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.

This original silver halide gelatin print was photographed, developed, and hand printed from the original negative in a darkroom on Ilford® Black and White 'Pearl' (semi-matte) surface paper by professional surfing, stock photographer, and master black and white printer Bill Romerhaus, of North Shore Photography, who has been shooting surfing, stock and scenics since 1967. He is one of a very few photographers in the world who specializes in hand printing original black & white waves and surfing. His most recent work has appeared in the  CBS/Eye productions "Hawaii 50", Disney/Dreamworks productions "Fright Night", ABC Television pilot "My Generation", Sony Pictures "Soul Surfer", CBS/Paramount Network TV series "The Cleaner" on A&E Networks, Universal Pictures "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", and Warner Brothers  "The Big Bounce", filmed on the North Shore or on Oahu, providing vintage photos of nostalgia, and surfing for background artwork. Bill has lived in Hawaii for over 50 years. In 1965 he shot his first surfing photo and was a contributing photographer to 'Surfer', and 'Surfing' magazines, and over 30 international surfing magazines and manufacturers, as a photojournalist for over 100 publications, advertising/stock photo agencies, and corporate clients worldwide.

In 1983, he started NORTH SHORE PHOTOGRAPHY, specializing in black & white darkroom services, after attaining the status as a master black & white printer and film processor for professional clients island wide.
