Item specifics

Condition: Used : Split the cost with friends
A vehicle is considered used if it has been registered and issued a title. Used vehicles have had at least one previous owner. The condition of the exterior, interior and engine can vary depending on the vehicle's history. See the seller's listing for full details and description of any imperfections. See all condition definitions- opens in a new window or tab
Seller Notes: Complete in overall very good condition with normal scratches, scrapes, scuffs and wear consistent with well-maintained 30 year old vehicle. Runs well aside from occasional cold-start issues if unused for more than a few days. Includes manuals, spare parts, documentation. Clear title, current registration and inspection stickers. This and the below description are not exhaustive but a reasonable attempt to describe condition.
Model Year: 1984 Fuel Type: Gas
Engine Size: 49cc Gyro NN50MD: VIN: JH2TB0904ES002816

Up for auction is my 1984 Honda Gyro NN50MD. I love it but rarely ride it anymore. Aside from its rarity and inherent collectability, I believe this to be among the most complete and well documented NN50MD Gyros I have seen offered recently for sale. I am the third owner though I have been around this scooter since it was new. The auction includes my inventory of spare parts, manuals and documentation.

Gyros are unique three-wheeled scooters: when you corner, the two rear wheels and engine remain flat on the ground while the rest of the scooter tilts on a swivel. This rare attention-getter was built in this particular body style in 1984-only. It is not to be confused with the more common open-framed TG50 “chopper” model produced in 1985-86.

  • 49cc two-stroke engine with oil injection and electric start
  • Two-speed automatic transmission
  • Top speed: 30mph (approximately) with 185 lb. rider
  • Mileage: 3,530 (at time of listing; this will increase as ridden)
  • Texas paperwork: clear title, registration through 7/2015 and inspection sticker valid through 12/2014
  • Body Plastic: Complete with some small stress fractures where the rear rack mounts, and a small assortment of chips, gouges and worn areas from normal usage. The most notable are: the right handlebar shroud has two damaged areas (see circled areas in picture): a worn corner and also a bubble where the assembler at the Honda dealer initially used too long of a screw and distorted the plastic. The finish still waxes to a nice shine except for the front fender, which is a different, flexible type of plastic that will not polish beyond a dull red. The front fender can be rocked up and down a bit, but it has been like this since new so I assume it is by design. As Gyro shoppers know, many of these scooters either have broken plastic around the seat lock keyhole due to theft attempts or are missing hard-to-find trim pieces. This scooter’s plastic and trim are NOT broken (aside from aforementioned fracturing) or missing.

  • Frame/Wheels: The paint is in fair-to-good condition with cosmetic surface rust.

  • Tires: All three were replaced in 2006 and are still in very good condition with plenty of tread life remaining.

  • Accessories: There is some light rust and minor surface pitting on the chrome mirrors and luggage rack. The chrome mirrors also have small areas of heavier rust where the chrome was scraped through. The chrome is all in good condition and shines up presentably. The basket has been refinished: the peeling vinyl coating was sandblasted, then the basket was painted with white epoxy marine paint and the ‘Honda’ emblem re-applied.

  • Electricals/Lighting: Everything - including the horn, starter, gauges, turn signals and all lighting - works perfectly.

  • Mechanical: Carburetor was rebuilt in 2009 with a new Honda gasket set and mixture screw/spring assembly.

  • Spares: New, unused Honda OEM headlight and head gasket, aftermarket electric choke/bystarter and an OEM spare muffler in excellent, used condition.

Documentation: Original factory repair manual plus a photocopy, original dealer paperwork (Sullivan Honda, Middletown, CT), owner’s manual and all title, safety inspection and registration paperwork that I have available.

History: This vehicle was purchased new at Sullivan Honda in Middletown, CT. Practically-speaking I am the second owner though legally I am the third: I purchased the scooter from a high school friend who bought it new for his paper route, but titled and registered it initially in his mother’s name. It was used regularly until probably 1986 when it was put into long-term indoor storage. In 2006 I purchased the scooter, refurbished it and rode it regularly through November 2007 when I lived in Portland, ME. I now ride it only occasionally.

Known Issues: Aside from the repairs mentioned above, this scooter has been quite reliable and trouble-free with the following comments: it starts easily and runs well if you use it every few days. However, if it sits for too long, it often needs a quick shot of ether (after removing the spark plug), and then it starts fine unless it sits unused again. Why? I don’t know, but I can attest that it’s done this ever since it was brand-new.

Terms of Sale: $300 is due via PayPal within three (3) days of auction close. Then remainder may be paid via cash (in-person pickup), check or wire transfer. Under no circumstances may the scooter be picked up until funds have definitively cleared my account. Due to its age I am selling this scooter strictly as-is with no guarantee or warranty - either expressed or implied. I have made a reasonable effort to describe this scooter accurately. Please feel free to ask any and all questions and let me know if you need detail photos of any particular area. If you’re local, feel free to contact me and set up a viewing. Serious prospective buyers-only please and NO joy rides; if you drop it you bought it! I can’t transport the scooter but will work with you or your shipper.  I’ll miss this scooter and hope whoever buys it derives as much enjoyment from it as I did!
