The cork oak is native to Portugal and once covered an area far greater than it does today. Portugal is a land of forests rather than of fields and pastures and has always produced cork.

 

Cork stoppers have been used to close bottles from the time when wine, beer and liquors were first produced. The Egyptians used cork stoppers to close amphora, as did the Greeks and Romans, and even the Phoenicians, and for all of these peoples cork was a safe and indispensable material. A third century amphora has survived to the present day and still contains wine that remains drinkable under the cork that has preserved it.

In the seventeenth century, cork was used for the first time as a stopper for champagne bottles by Friar Don Pierre Pérignon. In 1891 the first cork agglomerates were produced and in 1920 cork flooring was introduced.

Today cork is used in numerous coverings and forms of decoration, in civil construction, fishing products in urban infrastructure and even in the aeronautics industry.

What is Cork ?

Cork is a product extracted from the trunk of the Quercus Suber L, or cork oak, a tree native to the countries bordering the Mediterranean. Essentially, cork is the outer part of the trunk of the tree.

Cork is impermeable to gas and liquid and is also resistant to fire and insects and is unaffected by water. Tannic acid reduces any tendency to natural deterioration even more and turns cork into a product that is virtually indestructible.

With these qualities it is clear why cork oaks can live for five centuries or longer.

Harvesting

 

The first extraction, or stripping, is done when the tree reaches a minimum age of 25 years. After that stripping is done once every 9 years.

Stripping is done in the spring and summer when the tree is in the right condition for this. For years now specialised workers have separated the cork outer coat from the trunk of the cork oak using the traditional axe for the job. This operation takes time and requires a great deal of precision and care. After the cork has been stripped from the tree the last digit of the year in which the tree was stripped is painted on the trunk to identify the year of the last stripping.

The cork is selected and stacked at the forestry holdings and may remain there for as much as a year after being removed from the tree. During this time it may absorb moisture content depending on the weather conditions where it is stacked.

Purchasers visit the holdings to select the piles of cork that most interest them.
