PIET MONDRIAN. Scarce ALS: "P. Mondrian", 1p, 5½x7. No place, no date but circa 1924-1926. To Mr. [Felix] Del Marle, editor of "Vouloir" magazine. In French, not translated. The artist says he forgot to send some announcements that the painter-sculptor-architect Georges Vantongerloo had asked him to forward to Del Marle. Mondrian suggests that those might be useful to those who wish to purchase Vantongerloo's book L'art et son avenir, a collection of essays published in 1924. An article by Vantongerloo appeared in "Vouloir", number 22, in 1926. Although many of his early works were landscapes, beginning in 1921, Mondrian, who hated the color green, began painting in only the primary colors and white and black (which was only used for lines after 1940). Developing a style that he called neoplasticism, Mondrian used horizontal and vertical lines to outline blocks of color. His works include Composition in Red, Yellow and Blue (1926) and Composition in White, Black and Red (1936). 3 pinhead-size stains not touching text or signature. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
