AMERICAN PRINCES: Little Spaces, 2005/ 11-tracks/ YEP ROC Records If Little Spaces, the debut full-length by American Princes, is any indication, Little Rock indeed rocks -- in an aggressive, indie style. Commencing with the soulful, Spoon meets Afghan Whigs feel of "I Want to Be Good," such aspirations yield scorchers like "Rock n Roll Singer" and "The Sun Never Sets," where jagged riffs and chaotic harmonies collide like a five-car pileup. Co-lead vocalists/guitarists David Slade and Collins Kilgore don't always slay, however, with "Man's World" sounding like a sluggish, atonal rant. They don't always shred, either, as the acoustic platform of "In the Dark" and the heartfelt, liquor-drenched "Providence, R.I." exhibit with stellar results. Simply put: a mostly kickass band.

AMERICAN PRINCES: Less And Less, 2006/ 13-tracks/ YEP ROC Records There's a lean and wiry energy to Less and Less, the third album from American Princes, which drives the material strongly enough that it's easy to overlook the fact these guys can write strong melodies with welcome twists and turns, and play them with admirable muscle and finesse. They also have a welcome feel for dynamics, knowing when (and how) to quiet things down -- while the album is dominated by caffeine-powered uptempo rockers, "You and Them," "TV Keeps Me Up," and "Annie" are plaintive, acoustic-based numbers that offer a respite from the buzz and clatter without losing the underlying tension that unifies this album. Guitarists David Slade and Collins Kilgore are a great tag-team combo on this set -- the push-and-pull between their interwoven guitar figures is the core of American Princes' attack, and while they've got a way to go before they become a heavyweight championship duo on a par with Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd or Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, they bring enough fine noises to the table to confirm their considerable gifts. Al Weatherhead's production and recording is workmanlike and unobtrusive, though it's hard not to think this material could stand just a bit more aural depth. Still, Less and Less is intelligent and engaging music from a band growing steadily with each album -- if they keep this up, they could have a real triumph on their hands one of these days. 1 Listen Now! AMERICAN PRINCES: Other People, 2008/ 11-tracks/ YEP ROC Records American Princes' ranks swelled in 2006 with the addition of guitarist/vocalist Will Boyd, and the bandmates introduce their new three-guitar attack on Other People -- not in the loud, raucous style with which the Drive-By Truckers embrace their trio of guitarists, but in a cool and controlled manner courtesy of producer Chuck Brody. Having twiddled knobs for Jennifer Lopez and Wu-Tang Clan, Brody is perhaps best known for adding rhythmic crunch and booming bass to R&B records. But Other People allows him to flex his post-punk muscles, which he previously honed with Monsters Are Waiting and exhibits here in the form of reverb-heavy guitars and slyly danceable grooves. Songs like "Son of California" and "Watch as They Go" de-emphasize simple guitar chords in favor of minimalist riffs that chime, sparkle, and entwine themselves into a wash of '80s-styled sound. The rhythm section is beefier this time around, and occasional vocalist Collins Kilgore (who controls the microphone on four songs) is even more indebted to the decade of excess, singing with a thick voice that often lapses into a slightly bulky vibrato. If American Princes ever tackle a Tears for Fears cover, Kilgore is a shoo-in for the role of Roland Orzabal. Will Boyd also assumes vocal duties for one track, but David Slade remains the band's unchallenged frontman, whether he's lending some throaty gravel to "Kid Incinerator" (one of the album's only songs to place loud, rock & roll dynamics above atmospherics) or helming a hard-hitting pop song like "Real Love." Alternating between singers allows the group to cover more territory, but unlike a band like Guster, American Princes' vocalists aren't evenly matched. Accordingly, Other People sounds its best with Slade in command, even if his style doesn't perfectly match the band's '80s state of mind. 1 Listen Now! Regarding the artist: American Princes are an edgy but tuneful indie rock quintet whose angular guitar lines and anxiety-inflected vocals blend with hooky melodies and solid rhythms. American Princes are also a rare example of a band that moved away from the big city in pursuit of success; vocalist and rhythm guitarist David Slade, drummer Matt Quinn, and bassist John Beachford began working together while they were living in New York City, but the pressure and expense of life there made it hard to focus on their music. In early 2003, they pulled up stakes and hit the road for Little Rock, AR, in search of cheaper digs and more time to spend on the band. A dying van stranded Slade in New Jersey for a few weeks while his bandmates settled in down South; by the time he arrived in Little Rock, Quinn and Beachford had been jamming with Collins Kilgore, a local guitar player whose style meshed well with the new arrivals. By August, the band had recorded their first album, We Are the People, for the independent Max Records label, and set out on a nationwide tour. The summer of 2004 saw the release of a second album, Little Spaces, also released by Max. The band toured even more extensively behind their second effort, and in early 2005 Beachford left American Princes, with Luke Hunsicker taking over as bassist.
On the advice of their friends in the band Lucero, American Princes signed a deal with Yep Roc Records in mid-2005 and went into the studio with producer Alan Weatherhead to record their third album (and first for their new label), 2006's Less and Less. Guitarist/vocalist Will Boyd joined the Princes' lineup by the end of that year, and Less and Less went on to gain the band a number of new fans, including veteran R&B producer Chuck Brody (Beastie Boys, Northern State, Wu Tang Clan). In an unlikely partnership, Brody signed on as the band's new producer, and American Princes decamped to his Manhattan studio to work on a fourth full-length release. Other People arrived in April 2008 and introduced elements of '80s-styled new wave and post-punk to the band's sound.
