Nausea associated with motion sickness is unpleasant, but over-the-counter motion sickness medications can have side effects such as dry mouth, lethargy, and drowsiness. Ginger is a natural way to prevent motion sickness, with no reported side effects when used as recommended.

Ginger may ease motion sickness by preventing gastric dysrhythmias (abnormal rhythms) and increased levels of plasma vasopressin (a peptide hormone). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed to assess effects of ginger extracts on motion sickness. Volunteers with a history of motion sickness were pretreated with ginger (1000–2000 mg) and then subjected to circular vection (the sensation of body movement produced by visual stimulation), during which nausea, tachygastria (increased rate of electrical impulses in the stomach), and vasopressin were evaluated. Results showed that ginger improved each of the above parameters, slowed nausea onset and shortened recovery time after vection.

Ginger can also help ease pregnancy-related and postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Contraindications :

Ginger has been shown in some studies to lessen nausea due to chemotherapy drugs and anesthesia.
Ginger is usually well-tolerated at recommended dosages.
At higher dosages, single dosages of 6,000 mg or more, powdered dried ginger has been shown to irritate the lining of the stomach.
This action may cause some gastric distress and ultimately could lead to ulcer formation.
Therefore, it is recommended that dosages on an empty stomach be less than 6,000 mg.
