Item specifics

Seller Notes: Excellent condition, ready to play. One stably repaired minor crack, below average wear.
Maker:

J.A. Cermak, Kutna Hora

Type:

high grade 4/4 violin

Model:

Stradivarius

Country/Region of Manufacture:

Bohemia (ex-region of Austria-Hungary)

Beautiful, 115 years old Bohemian violin by Josef Čermák. The original(!) label inside the violin reads (see the lower part of the picture 6):

Zhotovil

JOSEF ČERMÁK,

houslař.

Č. 130.                                         Hora Kutná 1899.

(Made by / Josef Čermák / luthier. / No.130.       (in) Hora Kutná 1899.)

with the opus number (130) and the last digit of the year of manufacture written in ink.

Josef Antonín ČERMÁK (1874 Paseky n.J. - 1946 Kutná Hora) belongs to the most famous Czech luthiers active in the first half of the 20th century. He was a pupil of Benjamin Patočka, another fine Czech maker. | Worked in Kutná Hora from 1898 to 1910. Very fine professional work after Amati, Stainer, Stradivari, and Guarneri. Golden-yellow and rich red varnish. A very significant and influential maker in the Bohemian school (last 3 sentences quoted from Amati.com)

Built on a Stradivarius pattern, this instrument is probably one of the last numbered violins by Čermák (who abandoned the habit of writing opus numbers shortly after the turn of the century). Its build is excellent, as is the utilized tonewood and the dark varnish; the pictures speak for themselves.

The violin is in a very nice condintion for its age. There is just one minor hairline crack (about 7cm long) in the top plate near the bass-side lower bout (not a bass bar crack!), partially hidden under the chinrest (and practically invisible), which was stably repaired in the past. I see no other cracks (open or repaired). The wear is below average for such an old instrument – several scratches, varnish blemishes and spots with a peeled varnish (nothing severe, everything is seen in the pictures). The very tip of the upper left (bass-side) corner of the top plate is rubbed off (see the bottom half of the picture 9, e.g.). The violin has a recent master luthier’s setup, featuring a new bridge, pegs, tailpiece and chinrest.

Being ready to play, it possesses a very refined tone: mature, mellow, with rounded, velvety basses and brilliant, colourful trebles.

Measures:

  • length of back: 357mm
  • total length: 593mm

The instrument comes in an old case in a decent condition (but missing one fastener). A good vintage bow (Czech or German) is also included, which is in a very good shape (including the stick itself, which is firm and straight), and would only deserve new hair.

In this case, I have decided to set a very reasonable reserve – most likely less than a half of what some reputable eBay sellers would ask for it…

If you have any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them (if I know the answers, anyway), usually within one day (possibly except for the weekend). Please bid only if you are really determined to buy the offered instrument (in case you win the auction)! Also, ask me questions before bidding and before the end of the auction, please. To users with zero feedback: please contact me before bidding. Thank you.

After winning the auction, please contact me within one day, better before the payment - to make terms of payment and shipping. I expect the payment to be made within 2 days after the auction end.

Payment method: PayPal (in special cases possibly also bank order).

Shipping: Please contact me to find out details about shipping costs; conditions of shipment are specific to individual countries, and there are some exceptions to the stated shipment methods (mostly WRT the delivery times)!!! Note that in case of economy international shipping, the delivery periods may be very long in some cases. If you don't want to wait for such a long time, please choose the "Standard Int'l Shipping" option instead of "Economy Int'l Shipping".

Examples of shipping costs & ETAs (Estimated Time of Arrival at an Office of Exchange in a respective country!):

·         Shipping to USA: economy: $46, ETA: 30-45 days | priority: $75, ETA: 7-10 days

·         Shipping to Canada: economy: $46, ETA: 14-20 days | priority: $68, ETA: 7-10 days. The parcels to Canada can be only insured up to a low value (~$75)!

·         Shipping to Brazil: priority (only): $90, ETA: 7-10 days

·         Shipping to Australia: priority (only): $99, ETA: 8-11 days

·         Shipping to Japan: economy: $60, ETA: 12-16 days | priority: $99, ETA: 6-10 days

Some notes on packaging: I do the following steps to eliminate the danger of a damage to the instrument during the transport to the minimum: I put the bridge down, then unscrew the screws of the fine tuners and put them, together with the bridge, to the inner pocket of the violin case. Related note: There is always some probability that the sound post (inside the violin body) could drop during the transport. If this happens, it’s necessary to go to a luthier and ask him to put the sound post up again. It's a trivial and usually cheap act; the important thing is that the sound post has been expertly fitted in most cases, so there is no need to shape it again. Please understand that I do the described procedure to make the delivery of the instrument to customers as safe as possible (unfortunately there is no option to send the parcels abroad as "fragile"). If you wish me NOT to take those protecting measures for some reason, please let me know in time!
