This is a fine watch mainspring metric gage used for measuring the mainspring width and thickness as well as other small parts within the range of its millimeter scales. It is very easy to operate and read. It can measure the width of the mainspring in 1/10 mm and the thickness in 1/100 mm. Many of these gages are not well kept up and they are stuck due to rust or have lost their precision. This one is beautifully preserved. Old quality. No rust.

√ Approx: 8 cm (3¼”) long X 2.5 (1”) high, with a diameter of approx: 4.5cm (1¾”). Cast iron and hardened carbon steel construction shows pitting and black scale with most of the black paint fallen off. Covered with a thin coat of bee’s wax to protect it during handling.

√ Marked: “WALTHAM”; “PAT’D”; “JAN.1.07”; “RESILIENT MAINSPRING”. On the bottom marked: “335”.

√ Brass knob with diamond pattern knurling is not marred. Steel friction washer with blued adjusting screw is in great shape as well as the central axle. Very smooth movement. Friction regulation is intended to ensure a consistent force is applied during the measurements. If too much force is applied the brass knob will slip.

√ All regulating screws are blued. Hardened carbon steel anvils have smooth faces and they are well aligned and calibrated. Tension spring works smoothly. Please notice that the fixed anvil face is slightly convex to assist with the measurement of the mainsprings, so the mainspring should be placed with the inner curvature against that anvil and not on the flat one.

√ The hardened steel wheel has two scales. One for thickness in 1/100 mm units with minor lines every unit, figures and major lines every 5 units; range: 0 – 30. The scale for width is in 1/10 mm units with minor lines every half unit, lines every unit, figures and major lines every 5 units; range: 3 – 36. The wheel is calibrated right on the zero.

√ Please see the pictures to check the precision of the Waltham Gage on an old mainspring. A calibrated Vigor gage (the Vigor gage and the mainspring are NOT included in this lot) was used as a reference. All measures are right on the mark. This pattern of gages was manufactured under different names. The picture in the catalog is for a similar Marshall brand gage.
