This is a very unique find and for all those HISTORY BUFFS out there like me...this will trip your trigger. Wyeth is recognized as the manufacturer of the original pony express saddles. Although there may be ONE and that is being debated...of the original pony express saddles out there....chances are this may be as close as you are gonna get. Wyeth closed it s doors in or around 1986. So they aren't making anymore folks.

I am going to be careful in trying to date this saddle, cause some of my research could be flawed....being it was from the internet...Having said that I will repeat my findings....It has been suggested that because this is a slick seat...it pre-dates 1920. The buckle stirrup adjustment seems right too...being an innovation from laces but not quite to Bevlins. I am not certain if the conchos are original....I guess I only question them because I have saddles that date as early as the 60's that sport the same style. The Fleece is real sheep skin...another sign of an early saddle...or better quality newer saddle. The name plate seems like it is newer than you would expect for a saddle of the twenties...see there isn't that much available documentation on this and if anyone knows better about this please let me know.

This saddle in particular is in amazing shape...I liked it and first bought it not knowing the history because it is of a smaller size and works nicely for tweenagers (9-15 age group) and height challenged adults. The round skirt is nice for the shorter backed cob size horses, Arabs, Morgans etc. I think that the stirrups themselves are period to the saddle because of the square nut.

There is a rivet that is lost and I have handily replaced it with a Chicago screw...it works great but could be replaced easy enough as well. It is located on the fender and holds a retaining strap in place on the underside...basicly keeps the fender snugged up against the stirrup leather...as a stirrup hobble does today.

I have had numerous questions about the length of the stirrups..and would they lower enough for a long legged person...the short answer is yes...however...when in the lowest position...the leather needs to be slid down so the fender lays flat...(as with all saddles)...in the lowest position...the fender rests a solid 4 inches below the skirt...dangling from the stirrup leather....I find this "LOOK" unbecoming...and can create a "pinch zone" right under your thigh...at a risk of narrowing this saddles appeal...I will remind all of our TALL people...that the average adult of the 20's was a good 4-6 inches shorter than the rider of today. I have a 33" inseam...and felt my leg was too long...but ideal for the shorter rider.... I need to sell this saddle (or I would be keeping it)...but not at the risk of creating an unhappy customer.

I do not sell my saddles with billets, as I feel it is best to replace them...to assure they are safe. I have ridden in this saddle and find it nicely balanced and comfortable. So if your headed to Sacramento by way of Saint Jo....like the pony express rider of "yester-year"or even wish you were...you need this saddle! Thanks for LQQKING! QUESTIONS and ANSWERS WELCOME! Cynthia Pickering
