VERY RARE. Circa 1850-60.

Description:

Charming classic design. Pointed and fiddle tipped, with threading and beading on a VERY EARLY sterling Egg Spoon by William Gale & Son of New York, New York. Usually the form of this spoon would be that of a Chocolate Spoon, but the gold wash in the bowl clearly indicates it’s creation as an Egg Spoon. An Egg Spoon is a fairly rare item in itself, but one of this importance and of such a RARE Pattern from this Rarely Found maker, in sterling at a time when coin silver was the norm, is an important find.

William Gale was one of THE most important figures in American silver-smithing. Having invented the die-cut roller in 1826, he became the father of manufactured pattern flatware. Sr. and Jr. were an active firm from 1850-1866. After Sr. died the firm evolved into Dominick & Haff which was later acquired by Reed & Barton in 1928.

The spoon has a script monogram which appears to be: “MIT”. Moderate age/use related patina and wear to pattern. A major find for any collector of early American silver.

Condition:

Some heavy scratches/pitting in the bowl. But, with such a rare and important piece of American silver-smithing history as this, we would class this as overall VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT CONDITION.
