This car was purchased in early 2000 from the estate of a friend who had died suddenly at the age of 44 while in the middle of a several year restoration program for the car.  I picked it up in Connecticut as a stripped, rolling chassis and 65 boxes of parts.  My friend ran a small German auto parts business out of her home.  She had owned this car since about 1981, winning the Super Clean BMWCCA Oktoberfest events in both 1982 and '83.  I promised her brother and sister that I would restore the car as she would have wanted.  The car odometer read about 96,400 miles, and currently reads about 15,400.  The engine, transmission and shift linkage have been rebuilt in the past 3000 miles.  Actual mileage is unknown.

The car had been repainted a color that I call "Cream Yellow".  It is not an original BMW 2002 color, but in the accompanying photographs you can find pictures of this car in the same color, in the 1984 book Bavaria's Driving Machines, by Jan Norbye.  I believe the car was originally "Nevada" or "Sahara Beige".  I can't prove the car was always a 2002ti, even though Norbye's book describes it as a 2002ti.  I purchased the car with dual Weber sidedraft carburetors in a box, but later decided to switch it to Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection.  The VIN identifies the car as a U.S. production 2002, built in December 1970.  It's theoretically possible that a U.S. serviceman bought the car while stationed in Germany and it was always a 2002ti, but I cannot verify that speculation.  Bill Holmes, owner of Bavarian Rennsport, and I decided to transform the car to 2002ti-plus spec in mid-2000, believing the Kugelfischer (standard in the tii) would be easier to tune than the sidedrafts (standard in a ti)

My goal was to create a beautiful "resto-mod" that could be shown at local car shows and would be competitive in BMW CCA San Diego Chapter autocrosses.  I have only taken the car to High Performance Driving Events twice in fourteen years (Buttonwillow and Laguna Seca), but I have autocrossed it over 20 times.  If there are 20 stock M3's at the chapter autocross (E30, E36, E46, or E90), I would usually beat about 17 of them.  If there were 20 modified M3's, I would usually beat half of them.  As for the car shows, it has won the Super Clean and Masters division at the annual San Diego Clean Car Show, and won the Jack Cavanaugh Memorial Trophy (for Judge's Choice) as well.  Last August it took second place in the BMW CCA Oktoberfest Concours Modified division in Monterey, CA.

I believe my friend began the ground-up restoration in about 1996.  It included a new nose, hood, front fenders and rocker panels.  The car has lived in Southern California since that time, and has been in light rain only twice since that time, never in snow.  It has always been garaged and covered since I bought it.  While most people think the car looks great on the exterior, there is a small "bump" near the lower right hand corner of the back window that I believe to be rust, below a still-painted area.  The "bump" is about an inch in diameter.   A very recent "pre-purchase inspection" (PPI) by a local, highly-regard independent BMW repair shop noted that bump along with a small "rust" area on the frame rail.  They called these relatively minor problems that would not require immediate attention.  These are probably from tiny spots of rust missed in the 1998 stripping and repainting.  The rest of the car is very nice, but not perfect.  Bill Holmes says I'm too critical, but they are a few areas where the paint job from 1998 is lifting from the primer in very small spots, and there are several "parking lot dings".  One "ding" is on the hood, one on the driver's door, a couple in the rear trunk panel area, and a few on the chrome belt-line area.  The PPI mentions the dings, but called them minor.  The owner of that shop said he would not repaint the entire car, but would feather in a repaint in the affected areas.  But, that's why the price for this beauty is $27,000 and not $35,000.  I figure that a new buyer might want to change the color, so why go through the effort to repaint it, why not just lower the price instead.

The car rides on 15" x 6" Panasport alloys, shod with Dunlop SP Sport 9000 tires.  I also have a set of 14" x 6 1/2" BBS rims from a BMW 325is (E30) shod with Falken Azenis 615K's.

The car is mechanically superb.  I know of nothing wrong with the engine, transmission, shift linkage, suspension, brakes or electrical system.  Anything that could make the car faster, more reliable, or better looking (in my eyes) has been done to the car.  The transmission is a very rare 2002 close ratio five-speed, not a 320i conversion.  Try to buy an original 2002 close ratio five-speed, if you can find one in very good condition, for less than $4000.  It has a 390 rear end.  Bavarian Rennsport (BR) has rebuilt the engine in the past 3000 miles with ceramic coated pistons, a new valve train, a custom oil-pan baffle, and rebuilt the transmission and shift linkage as well.  It has a very rare BMW Motorsport 300 degree cam (cost, about $1000).  It has 320i slotted front brake rotors with 528i calipers.  The rear drums are from a 2002 Turbo (a bit larger than stock 2002's), and it has a tii brake booster with stainless steel brake lines.  The custom BR aluminum radiator is larger than stock, and the radiator fan has been upgraded.  The custom headers and exhaust are made to BR specifications and are highly regarded.  The PPI mentions oil "weaping" from the transmission/engine gasket and from the back up light switch gasket where it enters the transmission.  They also said that "all 2002's" weep a bit at gaskets and they see this as very minor.  The car is fit with an MSD ignition system.

The suspension was coordinated by Bill Holmes, using custom front coilovers by Ireland Engineering and Ireland rear springs, with Eibach front and rear swaybars.  The suspension is fully adjustable for camber, caster and toe both front and rear..

It has a cold start button, a High Performance Engineering (HPE) front stress bar, with engine block torque brace, and a HPE rear stress bar with battery relocation kits.

The interior is beautiful and in excellent condition.  While I have the original front seats, I installed leather Recaro's garnered from Dave Varco at Aardvarc Racing.  Dave says they were taken from a Porsche 911.  He recovered them and the rear bench in lovely BMW saddle brown leather.  The car is equipped with BMW E36 seat belts in both front and rear.  The carpet was installed at the beginning of the restoration and is in excellent condition.  The headliner and dash were also new for the restoration and are in great condition, but the vinyl shroud for the instrument cluster has a slight tear in it.  The tii clock was rebuilt with modern innards by North Hollywood Speedometer.  The VDO gauges cluster includes oil temperature, oil pressure and a voltmeter.  The Alpine stereo/CD player is new in the past year, with new speakers and has hands-free Bluetooth and MP3 capabilities.  I Installed a Momo Monte Carlo leather steering wheel, but have the original "city bus" wheel.

Why am I selling it?

I'm not sure I have a great reason.  I'm past retirement age and I had "minor" heart surgery this past year.  So, maybe I'm looking at things a bit differently these days.  Bill Holmes says it's the second fastest 2002 he's ever driven, after an Alpina special from years ago.  He says it would cost over $50,000 to reproduce what I have here and that I'll regret selling it.  Maybe I just want to put a smile on someone else's face when they get behind the wheel.
