1954 BSA Road Rocket A10 650 Twin

We recently found this BSA at a local yard sale – the previous owner (now retired) was getting up there in years and was no longer able to kick her over, so after many years of ownership, he finally decided to move her on to a new home.  He shared with us that he had done a light restoration on the BSA several years back when he lived in New York:  replaced the tank/petcocks, purchased a new UK made seat, had new standard pistons/rings installed, head rebuilt, new Barnett clutch, new oil lines, speedometer rebuilt (and set back to zero), new rear tire, new Hagon shocks and likely some other things that he failed to mention or remember (lots of spare parts/gaskets came with this bike and are included with this auction – see photos).  For those of you who are not too familiar with these machines, in 1954 the BSA A10 Road Rocket took the top 5 places in the Daytona 200 National Championship!  She set the motorcycle performance bar back in 1954!

We added the fluids (the previous owner had drained all fluids prior to putting her in storage for a few years), cranked her over several times to get the oil circulated, gased her up (with non-ethanol fuel) and after several kicks, she came to life!  She has 170+ psi of compression in both cylinders (see videos).  So, all we did was clean her up a bit, put some more air in the tires and cleaned the spark plugs ... she fires-up with a few kicks (sometimes only one kick), idles nicely and goes down the road smoothly (see videos), goes through all four gears with no clutch slippage and stops on a dime (considering the brake technology from 1954)!  Her 6V system still charges nicely (see video) and the electricals work including the headlight and brake light!  It is an incredible feeling to ride a bike that is 60 years old and still feels strong ... we have had her up to 75 mph comfortably and decided not to push her further ... although we are pretty confident she’ll do the ton!!!

She does smoke a bit from the left cylinder and tends to leak oil from the crankcase breather.  In order to avoid the breather oil from hitting the rear wheel & primary cover, we rigged a catch-can for the breather (based on some research on the BSA forums, it appears that other folks have had issues with excess pressure in the crankcase until the new rings actually fully seat ... maybe that is also the cause of the left cylinder smoking).  Like most bikes from this era, she does tend to have a couple oil leaks (less when left on her center stand).  The bike has roughly 368 miles on her since the light restoration with the new pistons/rings (see photo of clean STD piston through the spark plug hole).  We put about 20 of those miles on her since we picked her up earlier this month.  As you can see from the photos, the chrome tank has a few dings and some surface scratches but overall, she is a good looking machine ... especially considering she is 60 years old!  And what a blast she is to ride, there’s something pretty special about riding a motorcycle that is 60 years old that words cannot describe – she just puts that shit-eatin’ grin on your face when you go down the road on her!

We are hoping to be able to pass her on to a person(s) who really appreciates and is familiar with these old-school BSA motorcycles, knows how to work on them, has a set of Whitworth tools (as standard or metric sized tools will not work on her) and will give her the love she deserves.  As you can see from the photos, the winner of this auction will receive all of the spare parts that we got with the bike:  the original gas tank & metal knee pad plates (rubbers are long gone), original/used pistons & rings, spare original BSA gaskets (some used), spare Whitworth nuts/bolts, bearings, carb jets, cam (owner claimed it is a racing cam), fuel deflector for carb, spare shifter, original air filter, original fuel petcocks, spare cable and clutch springs (we think?).

The Engine No./VIN No. is CA10R575 (see photo), the Frame No. is CA78?31 (tough to make out that middle letter/number – see photo).
