Byrd on Transatlantic Aviation, fantastic June 1927 TLS

June 4, 1927 letter on the America Trans Oceanic Company stationary, written just a few weeks before Byrd's Trans-Oceanic flight (June 29, with Acosta, and Balchen as pilots, and Noville as an engineer), a response to B.W. Hirsch of Memphis, TN, seeking the Byrd's opinion on the prospects of Trans-Atlantic aviation:

"The principal engineering obstacle to overcome before their(sic!) can be practical commercial flights across the Atlantic is to build a plane with three or more motors that has a cruising radius necessary to make the distance and with a 33-1/3% cruising radius. This plane should be so constructed that it will fly with 50% or 33-1/3% of the motors dead"

A great addition to an aviation history collection. Exceptional contents easily outweigh the minor storage faults.   B.W. Hirsch was a prominent Memphis lawyer, and one of the leaders of the Memphis Jewish community.
