This piece comes from a recent acquisition we lucked into that comprised a quite large English, Irish and Scottish mineral collection that was quite impressive in its content of stellar rare and classic localities. Classic English specimens such as this are extremely hard to obtain today, and command very high prices. We urge you to do an internet search and see what is available, then come on back and shop with us.

This is a fine cabinet sized specimen from the classic locality of Victoria Flatt, Greenlaws East Mine, Weardale, County Durham, England. The specimen has rich crystal growths of transparent to translucent deep purple colored fluorite crystals growing free of matrix. The fluorite crystals on this piece are in surprisingly good condition for the size of the piece, age of the specimen, and locality. The fluorite crystals exhibit strong "Daylight Fluorescent" virtues, changing color in sunlight due to the fluorescent response to the UV portion of the sun's rays. It also has excellent fluorescent virtues under UV light making them highly desired by fluorescent mineral collectors as well. The last two photos depict the fluorescent response of this specimen under UV light, but I'm not very good at taking fluorescent photographs so please pardon the poor quality, the response is much better in person.

We have had a number of Greenlaws specimens over the years, but the pieces that came in this collection are the nicest we have had. These specimens are NOT easy to come by, in our 22 years in the business we have had maybe a dozen of them prior to acquiring this collection. I just did an EBay search and there are currently 3 specimens from this mine listed, and all of them are ours and are from this same collection! The regular photo's came out pretty good for this piece, but its still much better in person. It measures 7 x 5.5 x 4.5 cm in size, weighs 8.3 ounces, and has fluorite cubes reaching a quite large 5 cm in maximum diameter. It comes professionally labeled with both our label and the original collector's label.

The Greenlaws Mine is located approximately 1 km south of St. John's Chapel. Two parallel veins, the Greenlaws East and West were worked by the mine, but the east vein was the most productive. The Greenlaws East Vein was worked by the Beaumont Company between 1850 - 1884 for lead, and for a short period there-after by the Weardale Lead Company. Attempts to reopen the mine in the 1940's for fluorspar were reportedly unsuccessful.
