The Making of a CanadianCity
From the dust jacket -----
Not long ago the progressive city of Cambridge was three divergent municipalities, each struggling for its own existence. Cambridge: The Making of a Canadian City by Kenneth McLaughlin is the remarkable story of how these three rival communities - Preston, Galt, and Hespeler---developed separately and then merged together to overcome common problems. It is also the saga of daring settlers who shaped each community out of the wilderness - like John Erb, whose first saw mill in the county would foster Cambridge Mills hamlet, the foundation of Preston, the first urban settlement in the new land. Struck by the area's beauty, William Dickson established grist and saw mills at the future site of Galt. When he built the Galt Dam in the 1840s, Dickson ushered in an era of industrial expansion. John Galt's contribution would be rewarded with the village of Shade's Mills being renamed after him. And young Jacob Hespeler from Germany developed a manufacturing centre competitive with Preston, at a hamlet then known as New Hope.
While each of these mill towns would mature into thriving textile centres in the nineteenth century - aided by the coming of roads and railways - the twentieth century brought unforeseen difficulties, including. two world wars, the Depression, and competition from Europe in the textile industry. Mills closed their doors one after another and unemployment rose. Through this adversity, Galt, Preston, and Hespeler pulled together and stood as one. As their differences were put aside, the foundation was laid for the amalgamation into one new city. And so the city of Cambridge was created, a city that rose like a phoenix from the ashes.
Cambridge's past is brought to life with more than 150 black-and-white illustrations, many never before published. A twenty-four-page colour section captures the city's beauty, while a special chapter, "Partners in Progress" by Jim Quantrell, chronicles the histories of businesses and industries that have contributed to the success of the region and to this publication.
Cambridge: The Making of a CanadianCityis a valuable tribute to the rich traditions of a city where, according to McLaughlin, "the past is still present and where the future will be built with assurance."
