Книга посвящена малоизвестной, но яркой и самобытной отрасли камнерезного дела в императорской России - производству камей на Петергофской, Екатеринбургской и Колыванской шлифовальных и гранильных фабриках, действовавших подневольным трудом приписанных к ним мастеров. Рассказ о судьбах камейного искусства на каждой из них автор предварил экскурсом в далекое прошлое резьбы на камнях-самоцветах, помогая читателю проникнуться своеобразием и прелестью каменных миниатюр, некогда столь ценимых. В книге использованы сотни архивных документов. Сопоставив их с уникальной эрмитажной коллекцией камей, созданных фабричными мастерами, удалось раскрыть сроки изготовления и отправки готовых вещей в столицу, ход поисков нужных каменных пород, имена и биографии резчиков-камеистов, способы обучения и организация их деятельности, соотношение в ней копийного и творческого начал, роль царственного заказчика, частные и общие причины наступившего упадка и множество иных фактов и деталей. Все вместе позволило воссоздать живой и целостный образ исследуемого явления.
