THIS RARE BIRD TRUMPS SOME OF THE RAREST HIGH PERFORMANCE CHEVELLES OF THE ERA- 1970 LS5=4,298 UNITS, 1970 LS6=4,475 UNITS, AND THE L78=2,144 UNITS. IF YOU DOUBT THE RARITY, FEEL FREE TO SEARCH THE INTERNET FOR 1971 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO SS 454 FOR SALE. IN ADDITION TO THE BONA FIDE RARITY OF THE VEHICLE, THERE IS ANOTHER POSSIBLE BONUS. THE ODOMETER READS APPROXIMATELY 10,088 MILES. THERE IS NO PAPER DOCUMENTATION TO VERIFY MILES, BUT THE ORIGINAL UNDERCARRIAGE AND ENGINE BAY SEEMS TO SUPPORT THIS. ALL ORIGINAL COMPONENTS, INCLUDING F41 SUSPENSION, FRONT AND REAR SWAY BARS, AUTOMATIC LEVEL CONTROL, NUMBERS MATCHING 454 ENGINE, ETC. ARE WITH THE CAR. ALL SS MONTE CARLOS IN '70 AND '71 WERE 454 CU. IN. AND ALL 454 CU. IN.  MONTE CARLO ENGINES IN '70 AND '71 WERE INSTALLED IN SS CARS. PHOTO OF ENGINE PAD, SHOWING ENGINE CODE AND VEHICLE VIN, IS SHOWN. THIS VEHICLE WAS STORED IN AN ENCLOSED GARAGE FOR 25 YEARS. IT WAS THEN REMOVED AND UNDERWENT A FRAME ON RESTORATION. OVER $30,000 HAS BEEN INVESTED IN THIS CLASSIC, NOT INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL COST OF THE CAR. PLEASE READ THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION BELOW AND VIEW ALL THE PHOTOS. DON'T MISS OUT ON THE CHANCE TO OWN A NICELY RESTORED, REAL MONTE CARLO SS 454.

The Monte Carlo SS was the Gentleman's Muscle Car. Available with many luxury options and creature comforts, yet powered by the vaunted 454 Cu. In., 365 HP LS5 engine coupled to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission. It was only offered for 2 years in the first generation, 1970 and 1971. Revived again in 1983-1988 and 2000-2007, but never with the brute performance of the first generation. The '70 and '71 Monte Carlo SS stand as the lone high performance Chevrolet  luxury cars of the Muscle Car era.  The SS 454 package would be discontinued after 1971, but the 454 CID V8 engine would remain optional in Monte Carlos through 1975.

The Monte Carlo endured six design generations. The first four (1970–72, 1973–77, 1978–80 and 1981–88) were of a rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered (V6 available beginning in 1978) coupe style, utilizing separate body-on-frame construction. The later rear-wheel-drive generations bucked the trend of unit-body construction, along with smaller engines, that became more prevalent in the early 1980s as automakers downsized their vehicle lines to meet increasing stringent fuel-economy regulations in the aftermath of two energy crises that led to gasoline shortages and skyrocketing pump prices in 1973-74 and 1979-80. Despite those trends, the Monte Carlo remained one of the most popular sellers in GM lineup history.

The Monte Carlo started as a Chevrolet counterpart to the Pontiac Grand Prix, as conceived by Elliot "Pete" Estes, general manager of Chevrolet, and Chevrolet's chief stylist, Dave Holls. Though the Monte Carlo was developed at Chevrolet under the leadership of Pete Estes, it was formally introduced in September, 1969 by John Z. DeLorean, who succeeded Estes as Chevrolet's general manager earlier in the year after previously heading the Pontiac division, where he led the development of the Grand Prix.

From 1972 until the cars end of production, the Monte Carlo was also a solid success in NASCAR racing. The big (1973–1977) bodied cars were the dominant body style through 1980. Again, starting in 1983 with the addition of the SS nose, the Monte Carlo SS became the dominant body style in NASCAR through the rest of the decade when the car went out of production. Finally, the car came back to racing in 1995 when Chevy brought the car back into production.  The car brought Chevy repeated NASCAR Manufacturers Cup awards until it again was discontinued from production, and was replaced by the Impala for racing.

Arrow straight body has been refinished in original factory Nevada Silver base coat/clear coat. The body was taken apart and each panel was painted separately. Front clip, doors, hood, and trunk lid were all removed. The body was then reassembled. Paint is good to very good, has been buffed to a mirror gloss. The tail light buckets are a slightly darker silver. New Black vinyl top. New rocker moldings. All glass is in excellent condition. New front and rear bumpers. Excellent front grille. Drip rail moldings, wheelhouse moldings in excellent condition. Headlight and tail light bezels also in excellent condition. Door handles in great shape. Correct cowbell exhaust tips out the back. Blacked out rear valence with SS emblem. Single remote sport mirror was blacked out, so it was repainted silver chrome. Rally wheels with trim rings and derby caps. Brand new BF Goodrich Silvertown red line radial tires.

Excellent Black vinyl interior. All new seals, jam seals, weatherstripping, and window felts. New carpet. New headliner. New pedals. New rear view mirror. New ash trays. New sun visors and brackets. New factory optional  three spoke  steering wheel. New rear seat cushions and covers. Front bench seat has been replaced with bucket seats. The bucket seats have new cushions and covers. Slight wear on carpet sections on the lower portion. Factory seat belts. Factory AM radio. Air conditioning. Rear window defogger.

Great care was taken to preserve the mechanical originality of the vehicle. The engine bay was cleaned and detailed, but original factory assembly line markings were left intact. The heart of this ground pounder is the original, number matching, rebuilt  454 Cu. In., 365 HP engine. Quadra Jet four barrel carburetor mounted on factory cast iron manifold. Factory heads and exhaust manifolds. New dual exhaust with resonators and cow bell tips. Power steering. Power disc brakes. Original air pump is in the engine bay. Air ride components are present, but not functioning. A fitting has been installed to manually adjust ride height.  The only non factory addition to the engine bay is a massive Be Cool aluminum radiator. Absolutely no temperature problems, runs at 180* all day. Air conditioning is present but is not functioning. Compressor mounting bracket is present, but compressor is missing.

Turbo 400 automatic transmission. Twelve bolt rear differential.

Undercarriage appears to be original, with only maintenance and repairs over the years. Very clean and solid, with a natural look.  Floors are clean, solid, and undercoated. Frame is very clean. Suspension components are in very good condition.

Don't miss this opportunity. These cars don't come up for sale very often. All trades will be considered. Make sure to view the Photobucket file of pictures of the car.
