1. Can herbal remedies interact with each other or other medication
Yes, herbal remedies do have the potential to have a serious reaction to other medications you may be taking. Anything that we ingest is broken down to its core components and delivered to the entire body. These core components may react with other things in your blood system or inhibit the ability of other medications to work properly. For this reason it is always best to consult a doctor before trying anything new and be wary of any side effects.

The following is a short list of things that have a known drug interaction.

* Garlic capsules when combined with diabetes medication can cause a dangerous decrease in blood sugar levels.
* Feverfew should not be taken with Imitrex or other migraine medications as it may increase heart rate and blood pressure to dangerous levels.
* Guarana contains 3-5% more caffeine than a cup of coffee. It should be avoided if pregnant or breast-feeding. Caffeine is known to cause insomnia, anxiety and hyperactivity.
* St. John’s Wort contains hypericin, which acts as a MAO (monoamine oxidose). MAO inhibitors can cause elevated blood pressure, severe headaches and possibly even death. Combining prescribes MAO with this herb or other foods such as aged cheese can cause the effects to become even more pronounced.
* Orange juice should not be taken with antacids that contain aluminum as it increases the rate at which the body absorbs aluminum.
* Milk should not be taken with laxatives that contain bisacodyl such as Correctol. The milk will enhance the effectivness of the laxative.
* Green leafy vegetables high in vitamin K should not be taken with Coumadin as they negate the effect of the drug and may cause blood clots.
* Black licorice should be avoided if taking digoxin. The glycyrrhizin in the licorice can cause irregular heartbeats, cardiac arrest and dangerously low potassium levels in diabetics.

2. What is the best way to store my herbal medicines?
Herbal medicines should be stored as any other medicine should be stored, in a dry, dark cool location where children cannot reach them.

3. Do herbal remedies expire?
All natural products and medicines have a shelf life printed on the bottle. Many of the active ingredients break down when the plant is not alive, exposed to air or sunlight. The only exception to this rule is herbal products that are considered a food product. If the expiry date is drawing near or has passed you should dispose of the medication in a safe manor and replace it.
