History of Crumrine Gold & Silversmiths:

Crumrine Gold & Silversmiths is one of the world's largest and most progressive manufacturers of belt buckles, jewelry and accessories. Crumrine began as a small jewelry manufacturer in Santa Ana, California in 1948. Founded by Charles and Marjorie Crumrine, the operation grew to become Orange County's largest custom jewelry design, production and repair business.

In the early sixties, Charles began developing a specialized manufacturing process that allowed for the production of "hand-engraved" buckles and jewelry in large quantities. This process was the first of its kind in the world. Not only did this development satisfy the demands of the company's growing customer base, it established the company as one of the world's most innovative and capable western metal products manufacturers. Continued refinement in this process has allowed Crumrine to offer a product line that is recognized as the market leader in both value for the dollar and consistency in quality.

The Crumrine family relocated the company to Reno, Nevada in the fall of 1979. Now nestled against the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the Comstock silver mining region, Crumrine continues in the legacy of hand crafted products made in the U.S.A. From there, the company markets and distributes its products in territories in the continental U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Each buckle still receives the same hand craftsmanship, hand finishing and hand inspection that went into the company's earliest products. By using the latest tooling and manufacturing techniques, Crumrine maintains its long-standing edge in the categories of engraving depth, detail, luster of finish and overall merchandise selection. More than ever, Crumrine products are synonymous with the word "keepsake" .

Throughout its 50+ year history, the company has successfully maintained several important operating philosophies. The most notable of these is the company's continued use of the finest quality manufacturing materials available - without compromise. In addition, Crumrine is committed to the type of professional customer service that ensures real accountability. Crumrine also continues to focus its new product development efforts on creating original styles and designs, with the promise of meeting the latest fashion trends. Last but certainly not least, is Crumrine's commitment to the lifestyles it serves.

FEDERAL LAW concerning the marking of gold and sterling silver is as follows:

The first law regulating the stamping of silver products was enacted by the Massachusetts legislature in 1894 followed by several other states before the National Stamping Act was passed by Congress in 1906 and put into effect in June 13, 1907. This law, enhanced and amended several times over the years, provides the basis for regulating the marking and stamping of silver products.

Sterling Silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Sterling components and jewelry made in the USA are often stamped Sterling. Goods made for international trade are often marked .925 indicating 92.5% fineness.

The 1906 act required that any product marked "sterling" or "coin" must contain 925 per 1000 parts pure silver for "sterling" and 900 per 1000 parts pure silver for "coin" silver, permitting a divergence of only 4 parts per 1000 from this standard. An amendment in 1961 required also the maker's trademark to be stamped next to the silver standard mark.

Mexican Silver, German Silver, Indian Silver, Montana Silver, or simply Silver do not guarantee any silver content. German Silver is another name for the alloy of Copper, Nickel and Zinc usually called Nickel Silver. Nickel Silver contains no silver.

In many countries, precious metal must be stamped with a quality mark such as .925 for sterling. Some countries require that jewelry of precious metal be submitted to a governmental assay office for appropriate testing before being marked and sold.

In the USA, The National Gold and Silver Marketing Act DOES NOT require precious metals to be marked with quality. However, if a quality mark is used, the National Stamping Act, as amended, not only requires the use of trademarks, but also specifically requires the registration of such a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). In spite of the law, many regularly used marks on American jewelry are not yet registered trademarks.

The above Federal information can be viewed online at: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/guides/jewel-gd.htm

Federal Law states:

§ 23.6 Misrepresentation as to silver content.

(a) It is unfair or deceptive to misrepresent that an industry product contains silver, or to misrepresent an industry product as having a silver content, plating, electroplating, or coating.

(b) It is unfair or deceptive to mark, describe, or otherwise represent all or part of an industry product as "silver," "solid silver," "Sterling Silver," "Sterling," or the abbreviation "Ster." unless it is at least 925/1,000ths pure silver.

(c) It is unfair or deceptive to mark, describe, or otherwise represent all or part of an industry product as "coin" or "coin silver" unless it is at least 900/1,000ths pure silver.

(d) It is unfair or deceptive to mark, describe, or otherwise represent all or part of an industry product as being plated or coated with silver unless all significant surfaces of the product or part contain a plating or coating of silver that is of substantial thickness.

(e) The provisions of this section relating to markings and descriptions of industry products and parts thereof are subject to the applicable tolerances of the National Stamping Act or any amendment thereof.

Note 1 to § 23.6: The National Stamping Act provides that silverplated articles shall not "be stamped, branded, engraved or imprinted with the word ‘sterling’ or the word ‘coin,’ either alone or in conjunction with other words or marks." 15 U.S.C. 297(a).

Note 2 to § 23.6: Exemptions recognized in the assay of silver industry products are listed in the appendix.
