The organizers of The Doug Wright Awards for Canadian Cartooning are pleased to announce the auction of a one-of-a-kind piece of original art by David Boswell as part of the fundraising for the 2013 edition of the awards.

About the Artist
David Boswell (b. 1953) creator of the iconic underground comics character Reid Fleming: World’s Toughest Milkman, was inducted into The Giants of the North, the Canadian cartooning Hall of Fame, presented as part of The Doug Wright Awards in 2011.

David Boswell is an Ontario native and graduate of Sheridan College’s film studies program.  Seeking to earn a living in drawing rather than film, Boswell began his cartooning career in 1977, launching his ongoing comic series Reid Fleming, World’s Toughest Milkman in 1978. Based on a childhood bully of Boswell’s of the same name, Reid Fleming is a violent, over-the-top dairy salesman that became a fast favourite of underground and alternative comics fans in the late 70s and 80s. Boswell’s work influenced a generation of alt-comix cartoonists, blazing the trail for independent and Canadian publishing efforts for years to come and presaging the sort of absurdist humour that has shot the ‘Adult Swim’ cartoons to worldwide popularity. Over the years, besides self-publishing, Reid and Boswell have been published by Eclipse, Deep Sea Comics, and Dark Horse. In 2011, IDW issued the first volume of a hard-cover series collecting The Reid Fleming stories.

About These Auctions
The Doug Wright Awards were established in 2005 to spotlight the wide array of talented cartoonists working across Canada. The pre-eminent awards recognizing the art of graphic novels and comics, The Wrights are named in honour of Doug Wright (1917-1983) whose humourous strip Doug Wright's Family graced newspapers and magazines across Canada for nearly 35 years.

This auction is part of a series of fundraising auctions.  Please see our other auctions for more work my the best Canadian cartoonists, including Seth, Chester Brown, Pascal Girard, John Martz, Michael DeForge, David Boswell, Michael Cho, Dustin Harbin, Aislin, Zach Worton, Diana Tamblyn, David Collier, and Joe Ollmann.  Most of the artists who have donated work have created homages to classic villains from superhero comics.

All proceeds from these auction go to support The Doug Wright Awards.

The Doug Wright Awards are a non-profit organization formed in 2004, and are named in honour of the late Canadian cartoonist Doug Wright. The annual awards recognize graphic novels, comics, mini-comics, and experimental comics-based works published in English (including first-translated editions). To be eligible, a work must be a first-edition, full-length or a collection, and created by a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.

This year's awards:

Celebrate the best and brightest in Canadian comics —past and present— at the 9th annual Doug Wright Awards ceremony.

Hosted by comedian, actor and writer Scott Thompson, the Wright Awards, which honour the best in Canadian comics, will be a feature event of the 2013 Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF). This year’s Wright Awards nominees include industry stalwarts such as Michel Rabagliati, David Collier, Ethan Rilly, and Michael DeForge and will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

The event will also pay tribute to Quebec cartoonist Albert Chartier, who will be posthumously inducted into The Giants of the North, the Canadian Cartoonists Hall of Fame.
