Fiona Saunders

Width 18.5 inches - Height 15.5 inches

The Stephanie Hoppen Collection

Fiona Saunders (1965- )

Fiona Saunders was born in Harrow, London. She was educated in London at St. Martins School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, England's most prestigious post-graduate art college. Since then she has worked as an illustrator and graphic designer.

To produce her series of shoes as art, Saunders traveled to such historic homes of shoemaking as Northampton, England, where she found an inspiring collection of shoes. She also studied the works of twentieth-century masters including Vivier, Blahnik and Ferragamo, paying homage in her work to the many artists and artisans throughout the ages who have inspired her. Painting with gouache on paper using a three-dimensional technique, Saunders creates bows, trims, fringes and embroidery as highly decorative in gouache as they are on the shoes themselves.

Stephanie Hoppen

Stephanie Hoppen is an art curator and gallery owner, based in London, U.K., with galleries in London, New York and Toronto. Her broad-based knowledge and expansive taste, mingled with an infectious enthusiasm, have brought her work to the attention of the design world where she enjoys a reputation for finding and framing just the right pieces of art for residential and commercial locations.

Her recent book, Decorating with Pictures, Clarkson Potter/Publishers, N.Y., 1991, is a treasury of information for the collector plus a showcase of decorating styles and tips. Neither the novice nor the advanced collector/decorator should be without it.

One of the print genres addressed in the book is the category of fashion. Before improved transportation, fashion magazines and illustrations were the only means by which fashionable ladies who lived at some distance from the city were able to see new styles. Many of these old-fashioned illustrations are collectors' items. Shoe illustrations are especially rare, although shoes continue to be especially intriguing items of apparel.

"Concentrating a collection around one article of clothing," Ms. Hoppen says, "can be attractive and amusing." With that in mind, she commissioned a gouache series by English artist,

Fiona Saunders. Gouache is a special way of painting using opaque colors ground in water, mixed with a preparation of gum. In this series, the artist employed an unusual three-dimensional

technique, building the gouache to accent the bow, trims and other decorative accents. Remembering that proper Victorian Ladies would never have allowed gentlemen to examine their shoes so intimately, this collection of fashionable footwear might even be termed, dare we say, "Naughty?"

Recognized for her imaginative framing, Ms. Hoppen's thoughtful direction is shown here in a printed reproduction of the hand -gessoed mat with hand-applied gold-leaf liner. The frame itself is composed of a beaded molding which lines the outer frame of embossed wood painted deep coral over which gold paint has been applied and painstakingly rubbed off to produce the resulting burnished effect.
