DIY Speaker Kit

Manufacturer warranty:

2 years

Compatible Brand:

Fostex, tang band, alpair, hi-end,

This is a DIY kit for the famous Frugel Horn MK3 which is CNC cut from the highest grade BBB 18mm Birch Ply. The kit has been made specifically for people with minimal wood working skills and all the panels have recesses and grooves to make sure all the panels are perfectly aligned when constructed for the best possible sound. We could have made them from thinner lower grade materials or even MDF to get the cost down but if you are building some audiophile speakers like these I think it is worth spending the extra and getting the best. Being full range single driver speakers they do not need any crossovers so none of the audio signal is lost along the want and the horn design makes them much more efficient than sealed or bass reflex designs. This means they are ideal to use with Valve / tube amplifiers and tripath T-Amps as you can get great sound from just a few watts of power. We have a set of these set up in the office running from an 8w T-amp and they are more than enough to fill our workshop. Another advantage of these for some people is that they are corner horns, designed to use the corner of a room to produce the lowest notes and sound their best in the corner. Most speakers sound horrible and boomy in corners so you have to have them more towards the middle of the listening area and you don't get great stereo imaging in smaller rooms.

The holes for the drivers are cut to 96mm which is perfect for the small fostex or the Hi-End Chinese 4" full range drivers you can pick up on ebay for a sensible price but you may need a larger hole for something like the sigma fostex drivers. The front panel will come with the circular bit of wood for the driver still attached - cut almost all the way through but with two small pieces still attached to hold it in place... This is so you can either just push it  out if the 96mm hole is big enough you can drill through the centre for use with a larger hole saw.

If you are Just building them to sound amazing then they are a quick job to put together - you can probably build both in less than an hour but if you want them to look their best you will have to put in a bit of elbow grease with a sander / sanding block or a router with a roundover bit.
Even though they go together nicely I would say that you will probably still need to sand some of the joints to get them nice an smooth  if you are thinking of putting a veneer or laminate over them. I went all round the edged of mine with a belt sander to smooth off the corners and get all the edges perfectly flush then painted them with wood primer then gloss paint.

Nearly forgot to mention... The kit makes 2 cabinets so for the £150 you can make your self a pair as shown in the pic

As you can imagine these kits are very heavy so collection from Cheltenham would be best if possible but we can ship them via courier - Just let us know your address for a shipping quote

It should be obvious from the description ( an the price ) that these kits do not include any drivers or cabling

If you have not come across the frugal horn before then check out this link FH3.html. They are an open source project to make an affordable easy to build full range horn speaker for use with the many of the latest 4" full range speakers from companies lie fostex and alpair. I originally tried to build a pair for myself last year to replace some larger horns that were taking up too much room in my living room. Unfortunately even though the plans are pretty easy to follow I found that cutting the wood as accurately as was needed was a bit beyond me so ended u paying a carpenter to make the pieces for me. This gave me the idea that there may be more people like me who want to build a compact full range horn but don't have the skills. To make these kits we have teamed up with one of the UK largest speaker cabinet makers to make sure they are made to the highest standard possible. All you need to build the kit is some wood glue, Some G-Clamps, some pollystuff or wool damping material and of course your choice of full range driver. You may also want to sand, wax, veneer or paint them to really finish them off but I like the plain birch look - I just sanded off the edges to soften up the lines a bit and make them look more professional

Also.. We have been nominated for business of the year and if we win we will get funding to help create more awesome products so of you could take 5 seconds to vote for us here it would really help

Here is what they say on the website

The Frugel-Horn Mk3 (the name is a cross between flugelhorn & frugal) is a redesign of the original Frugel-Horn with goals of simpler, smoother, more versatile, a bit taller... all have been met, and driver versatility has proven to exceed hopes.

The 1st build was a prototype shown at the August 2010 VI diyFEST (4 years after the
original with debuted at VI diyFEST 2006). These had removable baffles and worked with FE126En, CHR-70, EL70, and Alpair7.

Since then 100s of pairs have been made, and they have met with critical acclaim. Even prompting it being called a "
timeless classic".

A number of other drivers have proven to work, Fostex FE127e, FF125wk, FE138eSR*, Mark Audio Alpair 7.3, Tang Band W5-1611, and a number of mid-woofers, with more expected to be fitted. Fine tuning is done with damping placement & density, room placement, Drivers like FE126En can benefit from a corner, drivers like Alpair 7.x or CSS EL70 have more latitude, and in many cases will need to have the LF levels reduced.

Deflectors & supraBaffles are optional. Woofers have been built into deflectors to give stealthWoofers.

*(FE138eSR has other issues no cabinet will fix)
