Detailed item info

Product Information
The Graflex Crown Graphic 4 x 5 camera is a press camera that takes pictures with film. This Crown Graphic camera has a sturdy and rugged construction made of wood and stainless steel, although some parts are aluminum and leather for design. Originally designed as a hand-held film camera for field work, it is lightweight, yet durable, and a good solution for outdoor shots. The Graflex Crown Graphic 4 x 5 camera supports interchangeable lenses for a variety of situations. This Crown Graphic camera folds up for portability, and is quick and easy to setup. It can be used with a tripod, too. This film camera has a flash, unlike many of the models built around the same time, and there is a drop-front design where the lens is pulled out and adjusted. The Graflex Crown Graphic 4 x 5 camera is an antique, but it is fun to use for those that like to work with film and create nature shots.

1950s Graflex PACEMAKER CROWN GRAPHIC 4x5 camera w/135mm f/4.7 Optar and top rangefinder -EXC

Manufactured sometime between 1955 and 1973, this is Graflex's Pacemaker Crown Graphic large-format 4"x5" camera with Graflok back and top-mounted Graphic rangefinder. The built-in top-mounted rangefinder was an improvement over previous models which used a side-mounted third-party rangefinder by companies like Kalart.

The camera was a favorite of newspaper photographers of the day because of its quality construction, ruggedness, fast handling and high quality optics which produced sharp and contrasty negatives. The lens on the camera is a 135mm f/4.7 Graflex Optar. The camera also has a built-in telescoping sportsfinder allowing the photographer to quickly frame his subject without having to put his eye to the tubular finder mounted next to the rangefinder window.

The camera is outfitted with Graflex's Graflok back which allowed for the use of roll film backs, and which became the industry standard because of how well-designed and easy it was to use.

The camera is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition for its age but does show various signs of use.  Please see photos to determine its cosmetic condition.  Mechanically, everything is working smoothly including the Graphex Full Synchromatic shutter which sounds strong and accurate at all speeds (no sluggishness), but I can't guarantee the speeds after so many years of non use. The built-in rangefinder works well with a nice bright rangefinder image.  The ground glass is clean with no scratches, and the bellows are light-tight with no light leaks.

The Optar lens looks clear but there are some faint coating irregularities on the front element that are very hard to see unless the light is at just the right angle.  They should have little to no effect on any photographs taken with the lens.

This Graflex model has a built-in body release - making it very easy to shoot with, plus hinged adjustable infinity-stops on the bed of the camera.

I noticed that there is a small plastic eyecup missing from the back of the camera where you look through the rangefinder window.  This does not affect the operation of the rangefinder or the image you see when looking through the window.  Everything looks normal; it's just missing the protective cup which isn't needed for the camera to function properly.

The camera also comes with its original battery door cover (the rectangular piece of plastic seen to the left of the rangefinder window on the back of the camera).  These battery doors are often lost because if the camera doesn't have the two AA batteries installed for the Focuspot, the battery door just falls off because there's nothing to hold it in place.  The Focuspot on this camera works fine; see the photo with the rangefinder windows lit up.

Please email me (daguerreian at gmail.com) if you have any questions.

SHIPPING: Domestic shipping is via USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation and will be calculated by eBay's shipping calculator to your particular city. The shipping amount includes postal insurance because eBay has decided (as of 9/22/2009) to eliminate your (the buyer's) ability to choose whether or not you want your package insured. EBay is forcing sellers to be responsible for the safe delivery of packages to their customers' doors, and I am no longer allowed to give you (the customer) the option to save money by opting-out of the insurance. Because I am not willing to assume the risk of loss or damage to packages, I must charge you to insure your package.

The shipping fee also includes the additional fees imposed by EBay and PayPal on the shipping charges, which amounts to an additional 15% on top of the fees charged by the post office. Shipping discounts are available for multiple purchases shipped to the same address in the same box.

International buyers please note: The shipping charges you pay when purchasing this item do not include import duties, taxes, broker's fees, or other charges that may be imposed by government officials or Customs brokers in your country. Please check your country's import regulations if you want to be informed about any additional charges that may be imposed on your package when it arrives.

PAYPAL PAYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Visa and MasterCard are accepted through PayPal for domestic purchases. For international purchases, because of PayPal's very strict rules regarding proof-of-shipment for sellers, if you want to pay for the item using PayPal, and the item sells for less than $250.00, I can only accept a PayPal payment if you are willing to pay for USPS Express Mail International or Priority Mail International shipping. They are the only on-line-trackable shipping methods offered by our US Postal System to international destinations, and an on-line-trackable shipping method is a PayPal requirement. If the item sells for more than $250.00, then Express Mail International is the ONLY shipping option available because it is the only service that requires a signature upon delivery, and PayPal requires signature confirmation on packages worth more than $250.00.

Additionally (for both international purchasers), if you pay for the item using PayPal, there are two Priority Mail services I cannot offer, their Flat-Rate Envelope and Small Flat-Rate Box. Neither of these two services are trackable (or insurable), and they are therefore against PayPal's rules.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: EBay has made changes to their payment rules whereby (in eBay's own words) "Beginning in late October [2008], sellers will no longer be allowed to offer [any traditional person-to-person paper] payment methods on eBay. Only approved electronic methods will be allowed." As a seller, eBay now prohibits me from even using the words that describe what those traditional paper-transaction payment methods are. EBay strongly encourages all buyers to pay for their items by using PayPal (an eBay-owned company). I accept PayPal, and encourage you to use it, but I will not force you to use it. EBay's rules also state "A seller can accept [paper payments] from a buyer if (and only if) the buyer requests it. We will not take action against a seller who is trying to accommodate their buyer, complete a sale and be in compliance with the policy. Sellers cannot in any way solicit [paper payments] from a buyer." So, let me be clear, I am not, in any way, soliciting you to use any payment method other than PayPal, I am simply informing you (the buyer) of all of eBay's rules, which you can read for yourself on eBay's website by clicking on the following eBay link (where the previous quotes came from): EBay's new rules.
