Antique ELGIN CHAS. FARGO 1871 Pocket Watch with Heavy Coin Silver Case OPEN INITIAL SHIELD ON CASE ~ A TIMELESS BEAUTY
Offered today is an uncommon historic treasure has an allure that is timeless and makes it a perfect keepsake to pass on to future generations. Becoming more and more rare, ELGIN CHAS. FARGO pocket watches are sought after antiques that are sure to retain their value if not increase it. Just wait until you hold it in the palm of your hand and admire its subtle elegance. It will undoubtedly prompt you to show off this rare, 143 year old beauty that was made only 6 years after the end of the American Civil War! So get ready to soak up the atmosphere of awe-struck admirers, because this 1871 ELGIN CHAS. FARGO delivers more than just a timepiece, but eternal appeal.
This hinged, coin silver case is also equipped with a cuvette (dust cover) for added protection. A unique, reptile skin pattern is chased around the circumference of the case edge while a dimpled border surrounds the bezel & case back. This bold, chasing adds to its refined design. A blank crest in the middle of the case front is a perfect place for engraved initials for that extra special gift. As can be expected from an antique, both the case back & front (most notably to the right of the crest) show scratching, but it is nothing that diminishes the beauty of this timepiece. Additionally, the cuvette (which also shows scratching around the key hole) has an engine-turned, chased border. The inside of the front case is engraved with "AM WATCH CO WALTHAM MASS WARRANTED COIN SILVER M108". This key wound and key set pocket watch, INCLUDES the key and has an elegant pendant at the 3 o’clock position. The inside of the dust cover is engraved with “4✩ M108”, indicating that this is a 4 ounce coin silver case. You won’t be disappointed by the sparkle that is set off by the silver tones and impressive details of this case.
Upon admiring its crisp white dial, you’ll find Roman hour markers surrounded by a classic minute track. The renown “NATIONAL WATCH CO.” name is stamped on this single sunk dial. A unique sub seconds dial obscures the 6 o’clock position and marks the seconds in intervals of 10. Impressively, this antique dial only has one extremely faint hairline emanating from the center than can only be seen with a loop. Delicate, peacock-blue hands definitively add yet another elegant feature. A very clear crystal sits slightly raised on the smooth, hinged bezel that flips open at the 12 position. This ELGIN timepiece measures approximately 59 mm, excluding the pendant, and approximately 72 mm with the pendant. Inside you will find a gilt, full plate, size 18 movement stamped with “CHAS. FARGO 149104, ELGIN. PATENT PINION”. The serial number indicates the year of manufacture as being 1871. A true testament to its quality, the movement has been carefully timed by our staff and we can confirm that it is still running accurately and strong.
Made in 1871, the year that U.S President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Civil Rights Act, this ELGIN pocket watch was created with a skill and craftsmanship rarely seen in modern day. This weighty 1871 ELGIN CHAS. FARGO watch has allure you can’t deny and must be seen in person to fully appreciate.
