100% original, 1860s sixth-plate (1/6) tintype of an armed shirtless man
armed with a hand-colored dagger and pistol tucked into his belt. His beard
is wild, he is very thin, and his eyes are quite haunting.
The strong consensus among several knowledgeable Civil War collectors that
I have shown this photo to is that he is a Confederate soldier. The prevailing
theory about why his shirt is removed is that he is a possible repatriated
prisoner of war, and his shirt was removed to show his physical condition
(mainly his loss of weight).
This man appears too thin. If a prisoner, he possibly could have lost a significant
amount of weight, enough so that people who knew him before he left for war
would have been shocked at his appearance. This unusual photo could be a
visual documentation of that.
That's one theory... Other interesting theories that have been proposed are:
Confederate guerrilla, member of the famous Quantrill's Raiders,
and even a photo of young Devil Anse Hatfield! (who formed a confederate
guerrilla fighting unit during the Civil war called "The Logan Wildcats")...
though a Confederate repat POW was the overwhelming conclusion
among collectors.
Whatever the case, it's a very unique, unusual, and striking image.
