Large Named WWII RAF Spitfire Pilot Grouping. Italian Prisoner of War.

Item Description

Please see my own website for an extremely rare and original Battle of Britain period headgear group.

Please study the images and condition of these items. They suffer from age and moth damage - in the case of the battledress quite severely. There is a very strong odour of mothballs to this lot. Very much an 'attic find' but historically significant. It would require dry cleaning, time and attention. With all this considered, I'm happy to consider offers.

This interesting RAF grouping belonged to a John Brodie Thompson Hall who flew Spitfires and Hurricanes during WWII. I purchased this from a collector who in turn had bought it directly from Hall's son many years ago. Some written information from the previous owner is included.

John Brodie Thompson Hall (185234) born in Dundee on the 26th December 1914, known simply as Brodie Hall flew both Spitfire and Hurricanes during WWII. Whilst on a sortie over North Africa (Tobruk) he was attacked and hit by a German fighter causing him to bail out over Italian lines and was subsequently taken prisoner. Hall suffered a severe injury to the left leg during the attack which led to it being partially amputated. Following the Italian capitulation in 1943 Hall was released from the PoW camp where he was detained and he returned to service, continuing to fly with the RAF over Europe. Hall died on 6th July 1986 and is buried in Kent & Sussex Crematorium, Turnbridge Wells.

Despite the condition it is still a fascinating group and could be a great display if presented well. The following items are included in the sale:

* C-Type flying helmet (named), E*-Type mask and Mk VIII goggles. This group has been adapted and modified to suit the original owner. It's a 1942 pattern C-Type but has had modifications to accommodate an internal wiring loom. It's also been extended width wise to the rear during its working life. The E* mask has been stitched to the helmet on one side - possibly to prevent it from falling off the helmet completely. The mask is suffering from rubber perishing but still displays well. The nose protector is present but detached. The goggles are in reasonable shape despite some corrosion to the metalwork and age related tarnishing to the lenses. Display head included.

* Service dress tunic (named) with trousers (poor condition); 1945 dated battledress blouse (severely mothed); RAF tie; two side caps and officer's peaked cap. All showing age related wear, staining and moth. The battledress is peppered with moth and although the service dress has moth holes to the left shoulder, this could be concealed by a Mae West or Irvin for the purpose of display. The hats are tired, aged and moth damaged.

* 1940 pattern flying boots. In reasonable condition. Both lightning zips working fine.

* Modified Spitfire(?) left rudder pedal. Apparently adapted with the addition of the strap to allow it to be operated with the prosthetic leg.

* Cravat not included.

As I'm a full time dealer there is a small chance that this item may be ended early if it happens to sell elsewhere prior to auction end. I do however try and avoid this from happening to avoid disappointment to bidders/watchers.

DESCRIPTIONS

All of our items are detailed and described as accurately as possible. We never intend to deceive anyone or conceal any information, however if there is any aspect of our item descriptions that you feel is inaccurate or incorrect, please contact us and we will do our best to rectify it where we can. Furthermore, if you have some information you would like to add then please let us know. We are always happy to learn something new, however please try and keep this as factual and as polite as possible. Statements that are sent to us in a condescending, insulting or downright rude manner will be ignored and more often than not just deleted.

When we sell military uniform or antique clothing, we take rough measurements for the purpose of giving you an overall idea of the item before buying - we are not tailors and our measurements cannot be accurately relied on if you intend to wear these garments for re-enactment or similar. We sell these as display items only and we no longer accept returns based on an item not fitting the buyer.

We are no longer able to reply to questions regarding exchange rates and conversion rate. We get a lot of questions asking us to convert cm's into inches etc and replying to these questions is eating into our time which could be better spent photographing and listing new products. We apologise if this is inconvenient but there is a wealth of online resources such as XE.com who specialise in currency exchange rates as well as sites that will convert sizes, weights and volumes instantly and accurately.

POSTAGE

We will endeavor to post your item(s) within 48 hours of receiving cleared funds however some weeks are busier than others and despatch may take a little longer than hoped. Paying by Paypal is always our preferred method. The quicker we get paid, the quicker you receive your item. We never profit from postage and packing costs. If we believe you have been overcharged for the service used, we will refund you the difference via Paypal after your item has been safely shipped. Remember however, P&P cost is not just the price of the stamp.

If you purchase multiple items, you will receive an overall postal cost calculated on the weight and size of your combined items. More often than not, with domestic items we will send the items 1st Class Recorded which is the 1st Class basic rate plus a flat rate of 75p.

INSURANCE

We no longer insure items up to the sale value due to Royal Mail and UK Courier's insurance claim policies. RETURNS

Unfortunately we no longer accept returns on auctioned items*. We design our listings to be as concise, accurate and as detailed as possible and we also include as many relevant images of the piece as we see appropriate. We cannot reiterate enough to buyers that it is their responsibility to request condition reports and extra information regarding the item in question PRIOR to bidding. We operate much the same as an auction house in the sense that all items are sold 'as is'.

Good feedback is vital to our business and we always appreciate our buyers leaving us good, honest feedback after they have received their items. We will then follow the necessary reporting procedure via eBay - non payers ruin it for everyone.
