Ideal father and son first car project. Time to move out some toys, we’re buying a house and some things just have to go. I have a runner 1965 Ford Mustang 289 coupe with factory air conditioning for sale in my other auctions…
Born on May 22nd, 1964 and listed here with NO Reserve, this '64 Elan car is rough but a perfect restoration project as the engine is original and the car is titled with current plates and tabs. I’ve cleaned it up for the photos and took many photos because a photo is worth a thousand words. This is a restoration project, make no mistake but when was the last time you had the opportunity to buy a no reserve early S1 Elan roadster? Body
It obviously needs paint and body work. The car has been resprayed multiple times and the paint under the black engine bay paint looks to be BRG green. I’m not familiar with chassis backbone frame cars or fiberglass bodies so you are welcome to inspect the car or have the car inspected by a competent Lotus expert before you bid. I’ll answer your questions as best I can about the body but I’m not an expert.
The front bumper has been faired into the nose but it looks like the bumper is still there, just the body gap filled in before painting so the front bumper is likely still there. If I were to keep this car I would strip the car of paint and repair any past work to factory/race safety standards and repaint. If your goal is an early Lotus daily driver that you can work on here and there as time/money permit then this is the car for you. Go through the brakes and rebuild the engine in the winter and you’ll have at least a driver before you do the full restoration it deserves.
Interior
The interior is in stock condition but showing its’ outside covered storage age. The front seats are not original but it looks like the glass is all original and intact and it even comes with a tonneau cover and convertible top although those are good for patterns unless you’re a master upholsterer. Dash is good and mostly intact. The Smiths RPM gauge has a hand painted redline on the glass face. That and the addition of an underdash oil gauge indicates there has likely been some spirited driving in the past which is normal – these weren’t grocery getters. Miles say 53,000 but who knows if that is original or not. The steering wheel is stock but broken in one section (see pics) and this car has a floor mounted dimmer switch. Keys were lost ages ago but it does come with a clean and clear title.
Mechanical
While the engine is original it will need a rebuild or going through at the least. The spark plugs are installed but the distributor is missing so the internals have been exposed to the atmosphere. I tried to turn it over by hand but no luck. I didn’t try a breaker bar. I haven’t touched the clutch or brake pedal either because I think the left rear wheel cylinder is froze already and I don’t want to chance having one of the front steering wheels freeze.

On Jul-02-12 at 10:09:30 PDT, seller added the following information:Thank you for the interest in my Elan, the 3 main questions I’m receiving are does the gear box shift, are the engine parts included, and shipping.
The gearbox does indeed shift and I can feel the H pattern however I’m not going to actuate the clutch pedal. The Weber carburetors and misc pieces are lost to the ages. A quick search on eBay for “Weber DCOE” brings up an abundance of carbs, priced from $300 to $750 for a set of NOS carbs so parts are surely available. Shipping arrangements are the winning bidders responsibility however I will go out of my way to help with shipping on my end and I will accommodate your shippers schedule.
Thank you and feel free to email/call if you have any other questions,
James Weyand
