This is a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 220D. It belongs to my girlfriend. The 2.2 Litre Diesel (about 65hp) was rebuilt, including new fuel lines throughout the entire car, about 8 years ago and has maybe 12,000 miles on it. It does not leak oil, although it does burn a little between religious 3000 mi. Oil changes (as most diesels do). It has a 4 speed manual transmission that shifts smooth and precise. This car is an unpretentious and dependable daily driver, as well as a cute little tank of a classic. It is seriously rock-solid and fun to drive. A quote from Curbside Classics: “While the simple lines may have been somewhat bland when new, they proved to be timeless. And you’ve got to love those color coordinated wheel covers!”
This particular car is in very nice all original condition for being 44 years old. There are a few chips in the paint, mostly on the front near the headlights and grill. I don’t believe there is a single ding on the whole car. There is a small piece of amber lens missing on the right front clearance light. She has a new one but has not changed it yet because I’ve had her off sailing with me so much lately. There is a small amount of slightly-more-than-surface-rust in one of the door jams, and there is a spot on the driver side rocker which is rough but not rusting through. That spot at the front right of the hood is peeling paint and exposed primer, not rust! There’s some duct tape on the rear seat (as shown in the pics). It could use a carpet kit, but the floor pans are solid through and through. The heater cables were disconnected during some recent engine work and not reconnected, so the heater is always on until that is addressed. The car does not have a/c. It never has since new. That’s honestly all of the bad out of the way, right there.
This car was stored on blocks, wheels off, in the basement of a home for 25 years. When my girlfriend was considering buying it, her mechanic put in fresh fuel, oil, filters and battery and it fired up immediately, which I guess is moot since it’s been rebuilt, but my point is it was stored indoors for 25 years,… properly. She then ran it on B-100 (100% Refined Bio-Diesel, not French Fry Oil. This is NOT a fuel-converted diesel engine) for about five years. It gets 20-25 mpg on either straight diesel or Biodiesel. She refined her own fuel and has always taken excellent care of her cars. Notice the deck lid is up on the Ghia? She’s a German Car nut and babying them is her favorite pass-time. At the moment we have the Mercedes, the Ghia, and four VW Bus’s among other Euros. (Look for the ‘71 Bay Window and a ’63 Splitty on here soon. We‘re paring down to two cars each). Absolutely everything on this car works. The windows all crank up and down smoothly and there are no cracks in any of them. The doors shut solid and do not rattle. It steers and breaks in a straight line, in fact, the breaks were recently done. All the chrome and badges are in excellent condition, as you can see in the pics. The hood ornament does sit straight. It’s on a spring and the car cover had pulled it over. There is a newer Clarion Stereo (DXZ385-USB) with front USB, MP3, ID3 tag display, WMA blah blah blah,… and CD Player. It has very expensive Goodyear All Season tires on it with about 80% tread on them. New in the bag snow chains. Jack and Spare Tire with Hubcap. Original Owner’s and Service Manuals, Spare gaskets and belts, etc. Always kept covered or indoors. Never in an accident. Clear Oregon Title.
All in all, a very solid, cool, and dependable above average All-Original Classic Car. The reserve is below the average NADA book price. Any questions,.. Please ask.
Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
