AUTHENTIC KWAKWAKA'WAKW SALMON PLAQUE

Dimensions: Length: 10 Inches, Height: 4 3/4 Inches

This handmade piece, by Sarah Robertson, is carved from traditional red cedar. The plaque is masterfully carved; displaying clean cuts, deep carving and fantastic detail. A stain has been applied that accentuates the wood grain and gives the piece an aged feeling. Sarah has signed the back of the plaque and I will provide a copy of her biography to the winning bidder. Shipping: Canada: $15.00 USD, United States $18.00 USD, International $22.00 USD (Shipping prices will be adjusted downward upon completion of the auction).

SALMON

Salmon is an extremely important resource to Northwest Coast peoples and is a powerful symbol of regeneration, self-sacrifice, and perseverance.

Failure to observe certain rituals, such as not listening to the wisdom of the elders, could ultimately result in Salmon shortages. Oral traditions tell of individuals that were taken by the Salmon, eventually returning with secret knowledge, enabling them to become shaman.

They are commonly associated with twins, so are often carved in pairs. Any twin could claim Salmon as a crest, regardless of lineage.

Salmon is easily recognizable by short fins, round eyes, downward turned mouth, and a large bifurcated tail.

SARAH ROBERTSON
