HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT, PERSONALIZED COPY, "BOSTON TRANSIT "BOSTON ELEVATED RAILWAY COMPANY. SURFACE LINES, RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR CONDUCTORS AND MOTORMEN, REVISED AND ADOPTED, 1907. TO SUPERSEDE ALL PREVIOUS EDITIONS." GEORGE A. KIMBALL, 1907. Antique Conductors and Motormen Book was the personal property of the Chief Engineer for the building of much of the Boston Rapid Transit Railway, and his name is embossed in gilt on the front cover of this leather bound work. The statement inside the front cover reads: "No. 12261. This Book Is The Property Of The Boston Elevated Railway Company. It Is Intended For Employes Only And Is Loaned To The Holder. It Must Be Exhibited To The Proper Official On Demand And Surrendered When Called For Or Upon Leaving The Service." The Index itself covers 16 pages, and this book has several line drawings pertaining to the "signal men." This is a First Edition Thus as it has been revised and updated and new rules have been tipped in over the preceding year.

Among Contents Addressed Include:
Conductors' Rules - Management Of Car And Duties To Passengers, Collection Of Fares And Accounting, Restrictions And Limitations For Passengers, Motormen's Rules - Duties Directly Affecting Persons And Passengers, Matters Affecting Cars En Route, Handling Car Mechanism And Use Of Power, etc. The rules and regulations are numerous, in-depth, and always for the well-being and safety of the passengers. A beautiful little antique leather bound volume of transportation history in New England, and in-particular in Boston, Massachusetts, slightly after the turn of the century. Book is in good condition and is a very worthy acquisition indeed.

George A. Kimball:

"The following is a more comprehensive sketch of  George A. Kimball, and his work which we find in The Electric Railroad. [Family History, page 1061, No. 2522.] The successful completion of the "L" division of the Boston Elevated Railway Company brings to public attention a Somerville man whose engineering skill and energy have contributed in a remarkable degree to the construction of this enterprise, George A. Kimball, the engineer of the "L" lines. All the plans for the structure, in fact from the whole of this $10,000,000 system were made under his direction, and he personally superintended nearly all of its construction. Mr. Kimball was employed by the Boston Elevated Railway Company in August, 1896, in connection with the preliminary surveys, and in 1898 was appointed chief engineer of the elevated lines. Since then, he has carried a tremendous responsibility. Some idea of the work of his office may be obtained from the statement that he had 150 persons employed in the engineering department, while 2,000 persons at a time have been engaged in the work of construction."

Condition:
Leather bound in Moroccan covers, owner's name in gilt on mid front cover, this rare book [we could not find another available elsewhere], is in very good condition, internally fresh and tight with a small closed edge tear on lower edge of front cover, with no loss  [please see images], and a tiny closed tear with no loss at bottom edge of spine.
