Pre-WWII Tula (Stalin era - 1930s)
Russian Brass Samovar with Matching Tray

This approximately 80 year old samovar is truly a magnificent example of the production values of  pre-WWII (Stalin era) Tula samovar manufacture. It has an elegantly inscribed provenance: "Made in Soviet Union" in English. The appearance of English lettering indicates the samovar was intended for the export market. During this time, a tea party that would feature a genuine Russian samovar was quite fashionable among European and North American high society circles. Also, anything Russian made and marked for export was carefully manufactured. Of historical note: unlike the myriad pre-revolutionary Russian models, samovars from the 1930s are relatively scarce outside of Russia (scarce, as in falling between "uncommon" and "rare"). At that time, there was no flow of immigration from out of Russia.

The brass is quite heavy and has a nice golden patina. If desired, something like Brasso or an equivalent polish will restore it to its former resplendence. The samovar does not have any leaks or cracks and is free of lime deposits. Everything is here and is original: the "otdushnik" (steam valve on the top of the lid), the "kolpachyok" (cover, or cap), the "reshyotka" (grill mesh) and it's attendent cover, the wooden handles and grips, and the all important "klyuch" (key, or spigot), which even has a number imprinted on it. The inside heating chamber pipe is intact and present. And to top it all off, it even has the heavy brass round tray with which it originally came. Volume is a bit more than a gallon of water. Combined weight of samovar and tray is 17 pounds, height is 20".
