About Desert Ironwood

Desert Ironwood is one of the most beautiful and sought after woods in the world, and an all time favorite for custom knife makers. It has a very durable, tight grained figure, with a specific gravity of 1.2, making it one of densest and most stable woods on earth. It is so dense that it will not float in water, and so hard that it has been used for bearings, but it does work well using sharp sanding/cutting tools. Ironwood does not splinter when shaping and it holds a great translucent finish.

Tips for Working and Finishing Ironwood

For a mirror finish, be sure to use your sand paper grits wisely so not to overheat and warp the wood. For example, start with 100 grit and work your way down to 340, etc. We do our best to sell clear materials, but if you run into any hairline checks when working the ironwood, I recommend bridging with super thin CA, ideally gluing at the 100 grit stage of sanding so you can sand off dry glue with ease. Once you get a smooth 320 or 500 grit finish, I buff on a hard cotton wheel using 2000 grit green chrome to a polish. You are done.

Do you professionally stabilize your non-ironwood blanks?

Yes, we spare no expense to use the best known methods for stabilizing and dying our other woods: insuring a full through impregnation for a super stable product you can trust on your high end craft or knife handle.

Will tax be charged at check out?

Only Arizona Residence pays Sales Tax.

How do you figure sizing?

We use US industry size standards, such as the common stud: 2"x4"x8', where width is the face of the block or scale. For example, a set of matching scales may read (2@ 3/8 x 1 3/4 x 5") this translates to (2 matching pieces, 3/8 thick x 1 3/4 wide x 5" long).

Is Ironwood getting rare and hard to find?
Ironwood is a protected species in both USA and Mexico and permits are required to fell, gather and transport it. Wide spread coppicing and illegal harvesting have caused strict penalties and tougher regulation. All our Ironwood was legally permitted. Recovery of a mature Ironwood tree is approximately 300-600 years: depending on climate conditions. Under the right conditions an ironwood tree can live more than 2000 years. Be very careful when trimming limbs off a live Ironwood tree, you can easily kill the tree.

SHIPPING

We try to ship all our packages in USPS Flat Rate Priority Mail in boxes unless there is a more economical method. We ship same day or within 1 business day after invoice is paid. Because our woods are dense and heavy, USPS Flat Rate is hard to beat, locally and internationally.

Do you combine shipping?
Yes. We combine shipping and do not charge extra for items, so long as they fit in the small flat rate box. For bundles and large items that do not fit in regular flat rate boxes there may be an additional charge, which we will either modify on your invoice or contact you with details.

How many pieces can I combine in a Flat Rate Box?
We can usually fit 7 to 10 pieces in a Small Flat Rate Box (approximately $8 in US or $20 Int'l). Medium Flat Rate Box can fit up to 20 pounds, or 35 to 50 pieces: depending on size (approximately $14 in US or $60 Int'l)

RETURNS

If you are not completely satisfied with our items you may return them within 7 days for full refund, less shipping charges. If the item is not as described, damaged or defective, we will cover the return shipping cost as well. I can either replace your item, refund your money or give you store credit.
