Larger than a miniature and smaller than a full-sized lamp, would correctly
be called a "Junior" size lamp and probably used as a night lamp or on a
dressing table
Background & History:
Although pictured in Figure 378 of Marjorie Hulsebus' first book, "Miniature
Victorian Lamps", virtually nothing is know about the origin of this very attractive
and appealing junior sized lamp. Hulsebus pictures the lamp in
pink shading to white and notes that it is "also found in blue and yellow
with a slightly different foot." It is not, however, found very
often in any of these colors. Over the past almost 10 years, we have
only seen, in addition to the pink lamp pictured in the book, three
examples of this lamp; this one and two others sold on eBay (one earlier
this year and one in 2006). Both of those lamps were yellow like this
one. Thus we are comfortable that this lamp deserves the rating of
"rare" which Hulsebus (in the "Price Guide for Miniature Lamps") gives it
(see the note below on our use of these ratings in eBay listings).
While we do not know anything
definitive about this lamp's origin, the hardware which is on it, and which
appears to be original to the lamp, suggests to us that the lamp is
European. The brass collar is of a style seen on European lamps and
not on U. S. made ones. The burner is a German-made Kosmos-style center draft
burner with a logo on the thumb wheel consisting of an eight-pointed star
surrounded by radiating lines (see the eighth photo). That logo is
identified in Fil Graf's "The Lamp Collector's Guide: Second Edition" as
belonging to Hugo Schneider AktienGesellschaft (this latter word translates
roughly to "publicly held company) of Leipzig, Germany.
The lamp itself consists of an
ornate brass foot which supports a heavily embossed opaque glass font, the
aforementioned collar and burner (note that the burner has an attached
tripod/shade ring), a ruffled edged umbrella shade embossed with a pattern
that compliments the pattern on the font and matches the color on the font
and a Kosmos, or student-lamp style chimney with a faint white brand and
logo. Note also (see the second photo) that parts of both the base and
the shade fluoresce, or glow, a bright orange when viewed under
"black" light. We believe that this fluorescence is caused by a
compound of manganese used as a coloring agent in the making of the glass.
Condition of
this lamp: This beautiful lamp is in very good condition. The
only imperfections we could find are three small carbon inclusions in the
glass font. These inclusions are shown in the third and fourth photos.
Two of them (see the third photo) are barely pencil point specks. The
third (see the fourth photo) is slightly larger (perhaps 1/16" of an inch in
diameter). These imperfections were clearly introduced during the lamp's
making. We could find no damage on either the base or the shade.
The brass hardware
(collar, burner, shade ring) has all been polished and is in good
condition. There is solder at both ends of the three rods
which hold the shade ring in place. The
burner screws tightly into the collar (which has no damage). There is an
old 2" wide flat wick which is formed into a circle as it passes though the
burner. This wick is dry and obviously old. Probably as a result
of both the age and the dryness, the burner thumb wheel does not adjust the
wick as was intended.
The lamp comes with
an approximately 7" tall clear glass Kosmos, or student lamp style
chimney. The chimney has a
white logo imprinted on it. The logo is worn. The name
of the manufacturer ("Prima") and the size of the chimney are still
present (10"'
or 10 "lines", where lines are a European measure of either size or light
output. According to The Lamp Collector's Guide, a 10 line Kosmos
burner, which this chimney would fit, would provide enough light for use as a
night light, hand lamp, hall light, etc., but not enough for use as a table or
reading light). The chimney is in fine condition.
Measurements are
provided below the first photo to the left.
This
is an elegant and majestic lamp with the ornate styling so typical of the
Victorian era. While it's larger than the typical
night lamp and probably gave off considerably more light, it would not have provided enough light to read by. More than likely it graced a
mantle, perhaps over a bedroom fireplace, or a gentle lady's dressing table.
Wherever and however it was originally used, it is a truly rare, elegant piece and
a fine relic of a bygone era.
About the Use of
Words Like "Scarce" and "Rare"
When we see eBay listings which
utilize words
like "Scarce" and "Rare"--especially when those words are applied to items
that we know to be extra-ordinarily common we find it disturbing. We
realize that some eBayers,
not having or knowing of a better way of assessing an item's scarcity, use these
terms quite subjectively and frequently based on their own personal experience. They simply don't know
whether an item is common, scarce or rare. We take two steps to describe
the scarcity of a lamp.
First, we only use the words
"Scarce", "Rare", "Very Rare", "Very Very Rare" and "Extremely Rare" if the item
in question is judged to be so by an acknowledged outside and independent
source. For miniature lamps, we use the ratings in Marjorie Hulsebus 2006
edition of the "Price Guide for Miniature Lamps". Marjorie's ratings are
also somewhat subjective (they are based on the collective view of a panel of 12
experienced miniature lamps collectors--we were members of that panel),
but were at least arrived at independently of the sale or offering of any
particular lamp. We don't always
agree with the Price Guides ratings but if we disagree, we will still quote the
guide's rating and then provide the reason why we don't agree.
Second, since June of 2002, we have
collected and recorded data on the offering of over 54,000 listed miniature
lamps on eBay and over 4,900 lamps offered at selected live auctions (ones
which we attended or from which we were able to get reliable data). Every day we
review several thousand new eBay listings; from among those, we identify the
ones
that are listed in the standard reference books and record basic information
(identifying features, condition, auction end-date, etc.) on each.
When the auction ends we go back and record whether the lamp sold or not and for how
much. We keep all of
this data in an online database and make the database available free of
charge to members of the Night Light Club and to others who have requested
access. We don't see every listed miniature lamp that's offered on eBay,
but we estimate that we see more than 85-90% of them. When we quote the
Price Guide's scarcity rating for a given lamp, we generally also provide
information, from our database, on the number of times during the period we've collected data that
we've seen that lamp offered on eBay. And it's this data that allows us to
substantiate, refine or, at times, to respectfully disagree with the rating in the Price Guide.

Please bid only if you intend to honor your bid with payment.
All items are sold "As Is". We do our best to describe
all items accurately. However, mistakes and oversights can occur. Returns will
be accepted within 7 days if item is found to be not as described. In general

Shipping Information
eBay's shipping calculator should show the correct shipping
charges. We charge only the actual postage/insurance costs incurred.
All items shipped are insured. Insurance is included in shipping costs. We do combine multiple purchases to save you on shipping costs.
If you win more than one of our items, contact us for revised and
reduced shipping costs.
If you overpay for shipping, or if we
inadvertently overcharge you for shipping, we will refund the overage.
(If we underestimate the shipping costs, which occasionally happens, we absorb
the additional costs). We ship using the United State Postal Service and
wrap our items as securely as we can.
Information for International Buyers
International buyers not using Paypal, please use a form of payment
denominated in U.S. dollars. We generally ship items internationally
using either the United States Postal Services "Global Priority Mail" or
"First Class International" mail, depending on the size and value of the
shipment. If we can ship the item for less than the eBay quoted shipping
price, we will notify you and refund any overpayment. We mark
international shipments as "antique" (when the item is in fact an antique)
since most countries do not levy import tariffs on antique items.
Import
duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping
cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your
country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be
prior to bidding or buying. Please also note that the receiving
country's Custom Service may cause delays in item's arrival.
