This is a true 3 hp
mini starter. Some vendors are selling
starters with a shallow back cap that are only rated at 2 hp, but claim that
they are 3 hp. The back cap/plate should
be approx. 1.25 inches long. The shallow 2 hp unit has a cap that is
approx. half an inch deep. Please read the complete ad before
deciding to buy a starter elsewhere.
As you can see in the
picture above, the knurled bolts that are included are the correct length
and style. Many starters on the market come with bolts of incorrect length. At
least 200 thousandths or more of the knurled section should show when
dropping the bolt through the alum. mounting pad. This knurled
section fills the oversized pilot hole in the block, as the diameter of
the knurled part of the bolt is much thicker than the threaded section.
Mounting a starter without
the proper style and length bolt will cause serious problems. The bolts
will flex, and the starter will shift when cranking. One or more of
the bolts will break eventually, but well before this happens, the teeth on the
starter and flexplate will be damaged. The problem is not the lack of knurling
on the bolt, but that the knurling does not protrude past the mounting
All GM blocks
have this unthreaded portion in the starter mounting holes with the intent
that approx. 200 thousandths of the knurled bolt will pilot into them. The
picture above is exactly what you should see when dropping the bolt through the
mounting plate. If you do a Google search on this issue, you will find links to
many car forums addressing its importance.
When mounting the starter,
be sure the gear mesh is correct, making sure that the gears don't mesh
tightly. It may be difficult to see this as the dust cover is usually in
the way. The long flat shims will bring the starter away from ring
gear if needed. You may need to use these shims if the starter has a loud
scratchy sound when cranking. This means the starter gear is meshing too
tightly. We recommend removing the starter and installing both of the
long flat shims to change the gear mesh. You will notice how much quieter
the starter sounds. The other shims provided are for use if your starter
gear is sitting too close to the flexplate and possibly touching it when the
engine is running.
We have tested our
sample starter on several engines with normal fitting flexplates and have found
the starter to have a very decent fit right out of the box when using a well
used flexplate or flywheel. Those using a new plate may want to use the two
flat shims upon the first installation.
At one time we sold the 3
hp starters and stopped for a long time due to a fit issue. We tried other
starters from some of our other suppliers and found them to have similar
problems, or the bolts were incorrect. We are very confident that we now
have a perfect unit that will give you many years of good service.

starters that we returned to our supplier are being offered by other
sellers. If you decide to purchase one of them, be sure that the
seller states that they do not have a fit problem and that the bolts provided

seller of the 3 hp mini starters, then disaster struck. We discovered a
serious fit issue on our second batch of 1,000-plus starters and they all
had to be returned to the supplier. Fortunately, very few went out to
customers, and we recalled the ones that did once the problem was
discovered. We tried starters from other suppliers and found similar problems,
as wall as new problems, like the incorrect bolt style or
length mentioned above. Rather than take any chances, we
waited until our Highline unit became available again with a
corrected mounting plate, and we now have it.
We offer a lifetime warranty on these
starters, so you can buy with confidence. My experience tells me that
there are many starters on the market that will not see one or two years
of service due to poor design/quality or the above mentioned problems.
Many of these starters that don't fit properly or do not have the correct
bolts will destroy the flywheel or flexplate eventually. I don't want
our customers to experience a failed starter or worse yet, a ruined flywheel or
flexplate. And you can be sure of one thing: many sellers don't
really realize this, or care. Rest assured that I always scrutinize every batch
