Six VERY RARE and beautiful textile sample fragments
by important and internationally celebrated artist-designer
A.M. CASSANDRE (1901-1968).
Renowned worldwide for his poster and graphic art, typography, painting, and stage design,
Cassandre's innovative pioneering vision revolutionized evolving visual arts and communication.

The artwork for these textiles was originally designed as a STUNNING deck of playing cards
made by Cassandre for HERMÈS fashion house of Paris in 1948,
and then translated into this textile titled CANASTA by Erbun Fabrics of New York.
This textile would have been a perfect fit in
a mid century home comprised of modern art and design.

The fabric is an EXACT likeness of the edition
(the first was for France, the second for America)
that Cassandre designed for the American market,
and it would have been distributed for sale circa 1950.
I have added a picture to illustrate the subtle differences
between the American and the European editions of the playing card
which shows how the suit sign (diamond, spade, heart) was slightly redesigned for America,
as you will see repeated in this textile.

Each cotton fragment is approximately 9 X 12 inches with small variations.
Five of the six fragments have the original information label on the back
which identifies the textile's name and characteristics as well as the company information.
The weight of this fabric is quite heavy,
and would suggest that it might have been used for
drapery, linens or upholstery.

The six fabric samples included are:

King of Diamonds, the rear label identifies this fragment as Canasta-Pumpkin
King of Spades, Canasta-Black
Ace of Hearts, Canasta-Olive
Jack of Spades, Canasta-Cherry
Jack of Spades, no rear label, pale gray background
Jack of Spades, Canasta-Beige

Alongside the textiles in some of the photos
I have included a picture of the actual playing card made for Hermès (not included)
from my personal collection, for comparison purposes.
(Please note that the playing cards pictured here are from the French Edition,
there are small variations which I have shown in one illustration.)

There is little information about Erbun Fabrics,
except that the company was established in 1928 and the New York showrooms
were designed as an indoor streetscape by renowned American architect Robert A. M. Stern.

All six fragments vary in color and size,
the colors remain bright, the textiles are clean,
there are minor faults (pinholes and fraying edges) throughout,
but overall they are in excellent shape and unlikely to be seen again.
A superb find!
