Seller Notes: Unless otherwise stated my items are in full working order, however I do expect my buyers to be responsible by reading ALL the listing before committing to a purchase & to have reasonable expectations about how a vintage item performs when compared to it's modern equivalent. In some cases my telephones have had components upgraded making them better suited for daily use, however some are aimed at collectors & as such will retain as many of the original components as possible. Therefore a telephone that has been listed as for collectors will not work as well, but is more historically accurate. Most of my items are vintage & will bear marks commensurate with age & use, so you should not expect them to be like new unless listed as such. Any significant damage will be shown in the listing, but if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Whilst I myself do not smoke my items are pre-owned, & as such can not be guaranteed to be free from smoke odour.
Type: Telephone Colour: Topaz yellow

Welcome to Tellingbones.

The home of quality hand restored vintage telephony.

Free delivery within most of the UK. (Highlands islands please ask about surcharges to your location).

Overseas prices are changing constantly so please ask me for the best quote.

I do not try to make my telephones look new...I prefer to make them beautiful.

For an old telephone to look this good it takes time.

This listing is for a lovely vintage traditional twin bell rotary dial telephone built in the 1960's, & later refurbished by the GPO in the 70's.

Cased in virtually unmarked topaz ABS it has now been converted to work on any phone line that supports pulse dialling, such as a standard BT line for example.

(Please scroll down the page for my notes on compatibility.)

As with all my telephones, it has been rescued, cleaned, converted & polished using recycled parts & traditional methods.

It is of course in full working order with a lovely sweet-sounding twin bell ringer & the speech & audio work as they should albeit with a vintage feel since the original components have been retained.

It is in excellent condition throughout as you can tell from the pictures, there is no damage of note, just the odd light scratch/scuff etc. The original cords are clean, but show usage marks as to be expected.

It still retains the original carry strap.

The line cord has a standard BT plug fitted & all four rubber feet are in good condition whilst dial is lovely & smooth & is fitted with a chromed finger dial & a chevron back plate with alpha/numeric surround.

You will also receive a card of 4 top quality reproduction dial labels free of charge.

Two labels will be left blank should you move home, & to avoid wasting time the other two will be printed with the Town & Phone number you have on file with eBay or left blank if it's a mobile number.
If however, you should wish to have a different number printed, or indeed a different style label you will need to leave a message to this effect with your details when you checkout.

So, if you are looking for a great piece of vintage telephony & don't mind the basic interface with a somewhat nostalgic feel, then Yes...This is the Phone4U!
That said, please remember it is essentially a used vintage telephone from back when Noah was a lad.
What you are buying into is a piece of British history from an era when people still marvelled at the fact they could talk to each other at all over such distances rather than just taking it for granted.
Whilst it has been restored to a lovely condition it is not a new item. If you don't have the patience to mechanically dial all those mobile phone numbers, or if you expect digital audio & a built in camera, then maybe it
isn't the Phone4U after all.
Basically, if you're not up for a bit of nostalgia there are plenty of modern copies available on eBay that would be much better suited to your needs.

This applies to ALL genuine vintage telephones on eBay, not just mine. The difference is that I'm letting you know!

Most of these vintage telephones were built with rental in mind, meaning they were built tough. Unlike todays throw-away consumer phones that leave the factory with an expiry date clock already ticking, these dinosaurs were actually built to last as long as possible. Seriously...They were! Because when the first 300 series rolled off the factory floor in 1937 the future was looking very bleak indeed, so few would have imagined they would continue production of that same series for the next 22 years. Do you think your iPhone will still work in 22 years? Well these phones are all working fine, & some of them have been doing so for 75 years. Imagine that?

It's fairly safe to say that even with careful use over such a period of time (WWII notwithstanding) they will inevitably have picked up the odd mark, knock or ding. Some areas will be worn smooth from repetitive handling whilst others remain tactile. Constant bright light, or even oxidation from contact with the air can alter the colour of vintage plastics.
The patina is what sets one vintage telephone aside from another. Individual flaws? Maybe. But when pieced together they tell the story of it's life. A carbon copy of many thousands made entirely unique by years of use.

With careful handling this patina can be preserved & revived by cleaning with just a damp cloth, a soft towel, & of course...some elbow grease leaving you with the lovely deep, natural sheen of a well used, well loved antique. However all this wonderful history is lost for ever once mechanical cleaning & polishing methods are employed.

All my telephones are sympathetically prepared by hand without resorting to harsh abrasives or power tools. They are cleaned, thoroughly checked for damage & personally tested on the UK standard BT plug & socket system. Unless otherwise stated they are in full working order. These checks are also carried out prior to packing...just for good measure. It may take longer this way, but it's definitely worth it in the long run.

The most colourful collection of vintage phones on eBay!

Old telephones do not work the same way as modern digital phones. By comparison they may sound distant or even slightly muffled. This is due to age & not down to faulty equipment. You should bear this in mind before you buy.

Phones that use pulse dialing are generally compatible with analog telephone networks worldwide (such as BT)but will not navigate the automated systems such as "Telephone Banking" services that require tone dialling, star & hash keys. They are partially compatible with most cable networks in that they will still accept incoming calls but will not dial out.
Touch-tone phones are generally compatible with both analog & cable networks worldwide. You should contact your service provider with any further compatibility concerns.

Unless otherwise stated my phones are fitted with a UK (BT) wall plug. Overseas buyers will require a UK adapter to allow the BT plug to fit your wall socket. These can be bought cheaply at most electrcal stores or online.

Due to factors beyond my control I cannot guarantee compatibility with any particular system or network.

The most common cause of problems with these old phones is compatibility with other devices on the line.
Things such as sky boxes, online gaming (Xbox, Wii etc), internet & of course other phones can all have an effect.
All my phones are tested prior to dispatch so any issue is most likely with your set-up at home.
Most problems can be found by first unpluging everything else from your phoneline, then plug the phone directly into the wall (no extension) & try it. You will most likely find it works perfectly. Then you can start adding things back until it fails again to find out where the problem is. As a rule a home phoneline will support no more than 4 ringing devices at any one time.

Please read my returns policy & check out my other auctions for more rare & vintage telephones.
