Capt. Don Stainless Steel 316L  Boom Brakes. Sail any size boat with confidence.

A boom brake is a great device for controlling the boom swing during an intentional gybe or even going about and a critical safety device for the unexpected gybe, particularly when sailing downwind, at night or short handed, and essential in poor conditions. It reduces your work load, stress on your rig and worries.

When at anchor a boom brake can be your best friend as you will no longer have to hear your boom swinging side to side even when there is no wind and a swell rolls your vessel.
It is an inexpensive safety device that should be on every sailing boat.

I have always dreamed of sailing the world and started the journey to fulfill my dream by going to sea full time for over 3 years on commercial vessels and getting certified as a M5 Captain and engineer. Friends asked me to make a boom brake that did not ruin a cruiser's budget. Well, after over 6 months of testing various hand made samples I am happy to say that I can now offer a 1/2 inch thick Stainless Steel 316L boom brake that is stronger, better value and just as efficient as any other boom brakes now available.
And your support goes directly to helping my wife and I get a  boat and hopefully fulfill our dream of sailing.

Designed and tested with ropes up to 5/8" thick for added friction. The Capt. Don Boom Brake has a yield strength calculated to be 9800 pounds before elongation so you can use them for other applications. Remember that the mast and boom absorb most of the sail loading so this boom brake can be used on a sail with a loading far in excess of the yield strength of the boom brake.

3D CAD research suggests rigging the boom brake close to the Vang to boom intersection. See image. The boom brake friction line deck attachment positions are best placed perpendicular to the center between the Gooseneck and boom brake. This setup has the least variation in friction line length from rail to rail anchor points, the small difference easily absorbed by the swing of the boom brake and line stretch.

The brake can be attached directly to the end of the Vang at the boom or to the boom track just behind the Vang but the best is to rig the way that serious racers attach boom preventers, by running a line under the boom or on the side of the boom between both ends and attaching the boom brake to that. This eliminates any boom point loading and keeps the boom under compression. See images of a Catalina 27 rigged this way.

Tie a bowline to the end of a rope with the boom brake held in the loop. With the bowline positioned aft of the Vang the rope was run through a pulley at the aft end of the boom and then forward again through the boom brake and around a cleat on the boom near the mast and back again to the bowline to tension it and tie it off. The brake can slide up to about 6 inches within the bowline loop. The deck to boom brake friction rope was just attached to the safety rails and worked great.

With boats bigger than the Catalina 27 it is recommended that the friction line be attached to the base of a stay or chain plate on one side, through the boom brake to a block on the opposite side and back to a cleat and winch for adjusting the friction line tension.

A boom brake is a much better choice than a boom preventer as it applies a much lower force.
I put together a short video of our boom brake and of course included some dolphins. http://youtu.be/GGWI9OqsDFk

Hope this helps.

Capt. Don

Comments:
Joe Anshien 2014-05-01 : Used the boom break on delivery from Martinique to Annapolis. Worked well.

Rodney Wood 2014-8-20 : I have an old IOR 1 ton warhorse with a fractional rig (rather long boom).
The Boom Brake worked great during the Summer Social buoy races with novice/passengers on board on the down wind legs.

Peter Puky : Don, suspending your brake from the boom ends turns the entire boom into a "compression post"! This would make the boom bullet proof! A very strong method of diverting the energy. As a rigger (historic = 25 years ago) I love it!! I think I shall have to get one for the vessels I make passages with!
