From the first section entitled “Origins” -----

In the heart of the Canadian Shield of Northwestern Ontario lie the traditional territories of the Mishkeegogamang Ojibway Nation. There is breathtaking beauty in every season in this place. The road through the reserve winds its way between the lakes and over the rivers and streams, connecting, like a dot-to-dot, the settlements of Mishkeegogamang people. And like the rich history of the community itself, these settlements extend well beyond the boundaries of the reserve.

Small outposts, some just visible from the highway, nestle by pristine lakes. Others are completely sheltered by the surrounding bush. But even these outposts, from Menako Lake 150 km north of the Main Reserve, to Fitchie Lake 100 km south, cannot really define the boundaries of the community. Even when we determine, "Here is where the people live, or lived," this gives us only the smallest part of the whole picture. A study of the written history provides another piece of the complex story that is the history of Mishkeegogamang. The stories of the elders add layer upon layer of meaning. From them, colorful details emerge, and matters of the heart.
