An Illustrated Edition
~ Unabridged With Illustrations from the Animated Movie by Rankin & Bass ~
WITH TEXT by J.R.R TOLKIEN
Here is an edition that does not come around all that often. This was originally released shortly after the animated move produced by Rankin & Bass in 1977. It was the first fully illustrated edition with the complete original text of the Tolkien's great classic, and being the fully authorized second edition, copyrighted 1966.
The illustrations and cinematic sequence drawings bring real life to to the Dwarves, Elves, Dragon and of course, Bilbo. Here are a few examples beginning at the hall of the Great Goblin:
Both maps are also included:
Oin, Gloin, Balin, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Fili, Kili, Dori, Ori, Nori, Thorin, Gandalf, Gollum, The Trolls, The Great Goblin, The Eagles, Beorn, The Spiders, The Wargs, The Elven King, Bard and of course, Smaug; all come to life in some 230 paintings and drawings that will enchant both young and old!
This uncommon edition is a must have for all fans of Tolkien's classic.
A NOTE ABOUT THIS PRESSING:The original release of this book in 1977 came with a pictorial hardcover and an illustrated glassine (thick clear plastic) cover, much like an animation cell which had Smaug the Dragon painted on the top left, and the title in white lettering on the bottom right on the front. The Fellowship climbing the mountain was part of the hardcover boards and used as the backdrop for the glassine cover, as shown in the picture at the top of this listing. This copy DOES come with this glassine cover! Though most of the covers were impossible to keep in good condition as it scratched easily, often cracked or bent and many, MANY of them were returned to the publisher damaged, this one is still in EXCELLENT condition. Shortly thereafter a softcover copy was released in a smaller format, but the paper was not as nice of quality, the binding was less than solid and the illustrations suffered greatly. After many years, and thousands of inquiries, a repressing hardcover copy was FINALLY reissued in 1989 with the original paper and illustrations as the original hardcover but with red cloth hardcover boards and a paper dustjacket and slightly smaller in size. ANY COPY with a paper jacket is NOT a first edition, regardless of what the seller claims... Just an FYI! A physical description follows...To see all other Tolkien items I am selling CLICK HERE!!

Regarding Auctions & the Item...
I have been collecting books and music for over 35 years and have amassed an enormous collection. I do not subscribe to "grading" as it is so subjective and most of the "graders" truly have no clue! Therefore I'll simply describe things in normal English!
This gorgeous HARDCOVER is simply beautiful. This is THE ORIGINAL PRINTING AND DOES HAVE THE GLASSINE COVER! The book is in VERY good shape, binding solid, pages clean, crisp and bright, none marked or bent. The hardcover boards show a bit of wear from storage over the years. The corners are very lightly bumped as one would expect from a used book, and when I say lightly, I do MEAN, lightly. Internally, the book is very clean and in general is still very solid, all illustrations bright and clear, text complete, no problematic binding issues. This collectible copy is a very nice example and would be a welcomed addition to any Tolkien collection. Considering it's scarcity, you should grab it while you can find one and a somewhat reasonable price!
A FEW WORDS ON TOLKIEN COLLECTIBILITY...I have been collecting Tolkien books for over 30 years and it really galls me to find people selling items for ridiculous prices claiming they are "rare" or "highly collectible"; and what's worse is, naive people are paying it~! The fact is, there are relatively few "RARE" Tolkien items on eBay and most of the stuff claimed as such, just isn't. Granted, some may be hard to find, but not rare. In order to be a VALUABLE collectible, the books need to be immaculate or close to it, a scarce or extremely early printing of an early edition and if it comes with a dust jacket, that too should be close to fine. Otherwise, they are just common items not worth much, but people are paying gobs of cash, caught up in the frenzy.
Before you pay high bucks on a RARE or COLLECTIBLE edition, ask questions and demand to see a picture. Even though the copyright may say 1966 for example, it can still be a 1981 or even 1997 printing, but the copyright was last renewed in 1966 so it is being sold as such. I've even seen 1960's paperback copyright being sold for unreal prices, and they are actually a 23rd or such printing! I don't believe all sellers are trying to be dishonest, some just don't know any better... Please be careful and bid wisely. If you have any questions regarding it's authenticity or collectibility, check it out and be certain you are bidding on what you THINK you are bidding on.

IMPORTANT MONEY SAVING TIP! If you are bidding on more than one of my items and would like to SAVE MONEY by COMBINING SHIPPING costs, I will be happy to do so, BUT, YOU MUST WAIT until everything you are bidding on finishes and I send you a combined invoice BEFORE you complete checkout. Once you complete checkout on an item, I cannot go back and combine it with anything else as eBay considers it a closed deal. TRUST ME, I will send you a combined invoice at the end of each item with updated and combined shipping costs and any deal discounts that may apply.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE BIDDING, winners agree to pay promptly once they receive a final invoice.

Media Mail (once known as 4th class mail) is a special class of postage for books, music, videos and other printed media available within the US and territories. It is far less expensive than Priority Mail, but - it ..... is ........... slooowwwww!!!! Despite USPS claims of 3-9 day delivery times, MEDIA MAIL CAN actually TAKE UP TO 3 WEEKS to arrive, and their tracking info is frequently not updated until it actually arrives, making that feature pretty useless! PLEASE remember this when you leave feedback scores as the choice is yours and not my fault if it takes a long time to get there! If you want it in a week or less, you are going to have to bite the bullet and pay for Priority Mail which will get it there in 2-3 working days, 99% of the time, but it is more expensive. Basically, the choice is yours, but if you choose media mail, please don't write to me in 5 days asking where your package is, because the post office will have it and most of the time, they don't have a clue!
All International deliveries go by Priority Mail and usually arrive within about 2 weeks. Faster shipping is available on request, but expensive.Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. You can check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying. Finally, we do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts"; it is illegal and immoral.
