Numerous photos of pages from the book are included with this listing.  The first two photos include the cover of the book and the photo of Taras Shevchenko, following  an additional five photos of pages from the book. This last group of  five photos  is quite faint.  .

The journal of Taras Shevchenko 

for the period, June 12, 1857 to July 13, 1858 

was published in facsimile format.  This is an exact reproduction of the journal   as written by Shevchenko.

A short, five page

autobiography by Shevchenko

is also reproduced in facsimile format.

The journal  contains daily entries some long, some short,  in the handwriting of Shevchenko.  The writing is difficult to read  and does vary  considerably among entries.  Included in the entries  are artwork,  music  and what appears to be poetry. These are page after page  of entries that are  very difficult to read.   Although not totally confirmed,  notes in the margin appear to be original to the journal before this book was published.

When this book was found  it had a dust jacket  that was in tatters… It was not possible to preserve the dust jacket as a whole.  The photo of  Shevchenko from the front cover of the dust jacket  was  taken and placed, attached at the four corners,  on the first page, or end paper of the book 

Including this photo provides a definitive reference to Shevchenko  who is shown  with a full curly beard, an unexpected view of him as an older person… Usually Shevchenko is seen  with a heavy, bushy, mustache… 

This journal  has the appearance of a memoriam to Shevchenko.  It  gives  us a view of  him in the years  very close to his death in 1861 at age 47.  Athough the journal and autobiography are in a facsimile format  ...

... this is about the closest anyone will get to Shevchenko himself.

He wrote this.  It is in his handwriting.  How much closer can one get  to Shevchenko…

It is ironic that although  Shevchenko is viewed  as a very important person in the literary history of the Ukraine,  the title and associated  information,  as well as the afterword in this book were published, in Kiev, Ukraine,  in the Russian  language…

This book is in a very good condition with edge wear to the cover, primarily evident  in the region of the spine, and as soft unbound corners.  An inscription  is present on the inside of the front cover….  There is no other writing or marks in the book.  The photo of Shevchenko from the dust jacket  is on the first page of the book.  The pages of the book are a light brown color, with that brown color, perhaps,  due for the most part, to the age of the paper used by Shevchenko in his journals.  .
